Zatanna's shoulders tightened. "I'm serious about this, John. They're serious."
He grunted. "Then why couldn't they come tell me?"
If the big blue Boy Scout and the bat were going to throw invitations around to anyone and everyone, then the least the bastards could do was give him one themselves.
She crossed her arms over her chest. "They wanted me to ask you."
Of course they had to send the only one's face he wouldn't spit at.
He looked down to his scuffed shoes. "You already know my answer, Zee."
"Could you at least think it over?"
"What's there ta think about?"
As much as fate intersected their paths, John wasn't some goody two-shoes in spandex. Joining the League would just be consenting himself to a long headache. 'Sides, at least one road to hell was paved with good intentions. If every path he crossed ultimately led there, then why not go down one that was a little more fun?
