Alternate History

Today's theme is going to be 'alternate history'.  Ever wonder what it would be like if your favorite character's world was not quite the one  they are used to?  It could be something simple- from just one decision made differently in their own world that changed the course of their lives or it could be something on a wider scale.

Use today's prompts to put your favorite characters in an altered timeline- either personal or more global.

To make it easy on our hardworking code monkeys, please format your posts like so:

Castle, Castle/Beckett,  Inspector Rick Castle meets a plucky female reporter, Kate Beckett, who seems to be one step ahead of him on this investigation

or

Firefly, Mal/Zoe, the Alliance lost

or

Fringe, William Bell, the dog did hunt

Nikola sat back with a pout as Helen, his beautiful Helen excused herself to sleep or something. He knew that she wouldn't allow him to retrieve the blood that those little bastards took, but what she didn't know wouldn't hurt her. The plan had been flawed, he could see that now. But, after sitting down and considering it, he now had his answers. Nikola left Helen a prose filled note and left, going back to work.

***
It took 20 years (better than his first estimate actually), a partnership with someone he didn't expect (John Druitt), and a promise to Helen but he succeeded. His Vampire Army/Followers were all but running the world to his will.

Finally things would be set right again. With him in control, of course.

Awesome! Emmet's high-five made me LoL, and I feel a twinge of sadness for Alice here. I imagine it would be even worse for her if it became a pattern. "This girl was gonna be my new best friend... but then my brother ate her." Poor Alice. Only Carlisle shares her pain.

Thanks for the fill! <3

Compromise, PG-13, Dexter, Dexter/Lumen, she stays with him

When they met, she was hidden under grey-brown layers of sweaty grime, like a priceless treasure waiting to be discovered. Dexter had thought she was as good as dead, another unfortunate passing through his hands on the way to an unmarked grave. He was relieved when she lived, and even then could not have said why.

Lumen was his candle in the window, guiding him home after his urges were dealt with - cleanly, carefully, with all due discretion and sacred reliance on the evidence needed to allow himself action. She did not go with Dexter anymore, but she loved him. She remembered the need to be the thing out in the dark with claws and dark inclinations. She believed his methods were just in their own way.

Winkingly, Lumen called his nights out by vague phrases from sitcoms; boy's night, bowling, sowing wild oats. She watched the kids and tucked them in with promises to send their father in to say goodnight. She sat up with Harrison in her lap, expertly holding his bottle for him as he dropped off to sleep and she read a novel.

Dexter had never been able to get close to the victims of his collars. He found out names, dug up graves, printed pictures, but could never truly know their stories. Some were gone and some of them survived as walking wounded. They were fearful and angry, helpless but for his intervention. He imagined they might sob in gratitude or sleep peacefully if they could know their abuser was dead. He couldn't tell them without risking his family but he could imagine he was doing good.

Lumen gave him the full view of his work. She had been right about regaining her freedom. Her personal demons died like any other man. They snarled as they did it, but then they left her to be free. He was honoured to have been a part of her release. It was an unutterable gift to have a woman know him and love him anyway.

His boat shoes squeaked on the tiles of the hallway, giving notice for him. Lumen was already on her feet, cradling an ever-growing boy across both arms. She grinned down at her charge and nodded toward Harrison's bedroom. Dexter no longer had to shift from executioner to father in a snap. Lumen got the kids to bed, he made a quick visit to each bedside, and they lapsed into the healing silence of a solid couple.

She didn't think it was odd to be hungry after butchering a human being, and didn't feel any need to hear gruesome details of his work. Dexter could talk about sports and she didn't fault him for his callousness. Lumen didn't mistake his conversation for a way to feel normal.

He had always known she was too good for what they did together, too human to take joy in sectioning up a corpse for garbage bags. Her face was often serious, but her concentration was for her college courses and his children. She had visited work with him and the laboratory fascinated her. It was a way to use what she'd been, outside the dark thrill that no longer possessed her.

There were moments during a kill when Dexter found himself glancing for blue eyes no longer on him - wanting the company in a lonely choice. They were talking marriage so Lumen could adopt the kids. His life as Dexter Morgan, single father, needed her as a helpmate more than his Dark Passenger did. The regret was brief and misguided.

He had loved Rita and would uphold her memory for the children, but he loved Lumen in a way that didn't need to be shut in a lockbox while he followed his calling. If they had continued killing together she might have ended up like his previous partner, or even like his brother. Few people could sustain the standards that kept their killings rational and measured. Lumen had been a temporary monster, like a cursed princess.

He smiled genuinely as she came back, pressing into his arms to greet him. With her, he could still be the monster while living as a man.

Thank you so much for this. It's wonderful. I love the flow of it and your imagery. Dexter's contented home life is lovely and I like that Lumen fully understands that he has urges she no longer does. Fantastic fill for this prompt. Thanks again.

What they found, finally wasn’t entirely Daniel. It was all him but more, as if he’d taken some step over a ledge no one else really understood. When they reach him it's by accident. Some other device that SG-13 had brought back to let the scientists play with. Daniel doesn't believe it, staring at them like they're the ones who should not be real. The device only allows them to see him, like a window. But it's only open a crack and nothing they do opens it any wider.

thing Daniel says seems to make any sense at first. Though the two weeks of everyone insisting he was a ghost likely doesn't help, or the next week of argument after argument, trying to find a way home for him.

Whatever mental filter he had had before was gone, two years of having only his voice as company. At first most of what he says doesn't make sense, until they learn that the logic is there is none. Whatever he thinks is said. Despite all those words he doesn’t look at them when he talks, not quite. His eyes keep on sliding away and then darting back quickly as if he might just be imagining they could even see him. The hand gestures have gotten more dramatic and he looks at his hands sometimes as if he’s having this conversation with them. He tells them about being on base for two years, about sometimes following someone home just for a change of scenery. When someone gets too close he backs up, curling himself as small as possible and flinches the one time someone’s hand accidentally passes through him.

Sam sat there with him the most claiming she needed to be there to work, generally doing no more then listening. Teal’c takes it upon himself to guard that small window where Daniel was visible after that first flinch, making sure no one crosses into Daniel’s space. Jack, with on other role to play, tries to draw him into their old banter. It took the first two weeks but by the third there was something resembling normal. It’s not quite right but he’s at least looking at them when he talks even if they don’t always know what he’s talking about.

The skull has to be dug up out of storage. When he sees it again, Daniel talks about watching it being boxed up, when he finally resigned to being stuck. He talks through all the theories he had and insists and insists they go back. Have to go back.

At least no one has to ask which planet to go to. They all had that one memorized. The place where Daniel was lost – no one would say died but they had all been thinking it. When it was all done and finished, the bright lights and big aliens, they all were stuck. Staring.

“Can you still see me?” He whispers into the oppressive silence of the pyramid. Suddenly frightened to talk.

“Yea, Daniel.” Sam nods, trying to sound encouraging and supportive but it’s Jack who moves first. Who finally reaches out and touches him and it doesn’t matter that maybe Daniel’s finally lost it. He mutters to himself the whole way back to the SGC and won’t stop poking and prodding as if he might pass right through but it’s Daniel and his team will forgive a little less personal space to have their dead doctor back.

It's been a pretty normal day for him so far: breakfast, work, lunch, back to work, and then grocery shopping, but Pete can't help but feel something's missing, even as he tries to figure out what kind of cookies he wants from the local bakery. He shakes the feeling off, deciding to go with the snickerdoodles this time, and then pays Mrs. Canton when she hands him the bag of still-warm baked goods. Every time he's been here, the cookies are fantastic, and he's often teased the widowed shop owner about her possible Keebler Elf heritage, given the wonderful taste of her cookies. She laughs each time, a bright and cheery sound, and then shoos him on his way.

It's early May now, and the pastel pink of cherry blossoms beckon Pete to a park. He finds a secluded bench underneath one of the blossom-filled trees, eagerly anticipating his sugary snack. He's just about to sit down when a voice calls out in alarm and he gets the wind knocked out of him. It takes Pete a second to realize what just happened- a woman had thrown herself at him, knocking him away from the bench and spilling his cookies -but by that time the woman's busy throwing what looks like purple goo on the bench.

There's a bright flash of light that momentarily blinds Pete, but when it fades, the goo is gone, but the woman isn't.

'I'm always going to have to save you, aren't I?' she asks, looking oddly amused. Pete's confused; he's never seen this woman before- or at least, he doesn't think he has. She does look kind of familiar, though, so he takes the hand that she offers to help him up.

And in that moment, when they touch skin-to-skin, he remembers.

'Myka!'
