Ned Stark stood at the deck of the ship on its way to Free Cities, thinking about where it all went wrong.

Lyanna. The long-awaited and only daughter. Pride of the house. Who would have thought she would be the one to ruin us all? he thought.

She was considered an oddity. She allowed her brothers to ride and spar with her, fuelling rumours about wild Stark women and uncouth menfolk. She laughed those rumours off easily as if shrugging off the wind.

Then the meeting in Harrenhal happened. She saw Targaryen offspring, engaged to daughter-heir of Dorne. And then she snatched him and took him to Winterfell.

Dragons came and Sunspear joined them. Fishes chose to remain ambiguous, even though their younger daughter asked for Brandon’s hand. Chances are, she will take the boy who tried to weasel himself into her graces until Brandon outwitted him by presenting the lady with a magnificent statue of Mother – like his namesake, The Builder, he had a talent for working the stone and wood. The boy barely scraped some weavework. Small in stature as he was, he could never hope to amount as much of a worker. But she is not the heir and he is politically more convenient now.

And then Lions, joined by Stags, stabbed them all in the back. Nobody was surprised about Lannisters, but Baratheons? They never thought the whole House still resented Lyanna for refusing the offer of Robert.

Now the Golden Queen sits on the Thorned Throne, her consort the eldest of Baratheons. Not much to look at, but handy at masonry. She has three golden children, one of them a daughter and heir. Lisa Tully of Riverlands serves as her Hand.

And Ned is the last survivor of his House. Queen fancied him, for some reason, and while she couldn’t afford breaking the alliance with Baratheons, she did allow him great clemency, claiming that as the youngest he was powerless. Still, Ned knew better than to stick around. Beautiful as she was, he didn’t fancy himself becoming lioness’ toy.

He arrived in Pentos and set out to seek magister Ilyrio, whom he was told could help him. Men were able to partake in slightly wider range of professions in Free Cities. Still, merchant was about as high as one could get, and Ilyrio was one of the most influential.

He didn’t expect to be greeted by white-haired children.

That’s when Ned knew what he had to do. His House betrayed the kingdom. In turn, they were betrayed by their old allies. Ned knew he had to pledge his allegiance where it should have always belonged in order to restore the things to the way they should have been.

He didn’t delude himself future Queen would find him worthy; she will take her brother, sickly and unskilled as he seemed – the boy didn’t even have proper calluses on his hands. But it was the Targaryen way. Nevertheless, Ned shall pledge his hands and his mastery of iron and wood to her.

He came in front of the Targaryen princess, looking at him with curiosity, and bent his knee.
