Thursday: On Vacation

My last day... *pout* I shall have to come up with some crazy themes and do this again!

Today's theme is On Vacation.

After yesterday's insanity, our characters really need a break. What do they do to get away from their normal lives?

Please think about our wonderful codemonkeys and use the correct format (the second is for crossovers).

Fandom, Pairing, Prompt
Fandom1/Fandom2, Pairing, Prompt

Firefly, River, Building sand-castles on the beach
Torchwood/Heroes, Jack/Ianto/Gabriel, A broken stopwatch spoils half their vacation plans

Please remember not to post more than 5 prompts in a row and more than 3 prompts per fandom. If one or more of your prompts are answered, you can prompt again later in the day.

If you don't see anything you like, you can always Adopt a Lonely Prompt.

So sweet. And I agree, the bits in italics really work. :D

Not the Way to Die

[personal profile] chibifukurou 2009-06-30 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
He wants to be anywhere but here. Freezing to death isn’t the way he wants to die. He thinks that Rouge must have known that, why else would she rescue him from the collapsing Citadel only to leave him for dead on the ice. He wonders why she did it? Was it because of what happened in the Marauder’s tunnels, or was she mad because she’d discovered his crush on Logan. He hopes that it’s the first, but he thinks that the second is more likely. She’s too much like her mother for him to believe the best of her.

He knows he should try to stay awake, try to fight against the cold. He doesn’t. No one’s coming for him, and he doesn’t feel like prolonging this agony.

When he wakes, he’s being held against a warm chest. At first he thinks he’s dead, then he realizes that he’s still surrounded by the ice and snow that he fell asleep in, only now the Blackhawk is there as well. As the person who’s holding him shifts he can feel a scruffy chin against his forehead and smell the scent of cigar smoke. He manages to smile weakly up at his savior before he falls back into the darkness. He should have known Wolverine would come for him.

It was a small slice of heaven. The shade, the slight breeze, the hammock swaying back and forth. The humid air that glued their skin together where it touched.

Long fingers carded lengthening soft strands, the smell of the grill being fired up wafted on the air.

"You glad we came home?"

A nod brushed cheek against chest. "Like Vancouver, our house but..."

"'s not Texas."

Eyelids lowered and breathing deepened, "exactly."

The hammock swayed as two men rested in each other's arms.

Supernatural, Sam & wee!Dean, the beach

Spray-on sun screen was the best invention in the universe. Screw sliced bread, this stuff was golden. It didn't matter that Dean was bouncing around like a demented pixie on the sugar rush from hell.

"Come on, Sammy! Finish already!"

"I'm doing this as fast as I can, Dean. All right, your back's done. Turn around."

"Sammmmmy," Dean turned and grabbed Sam's face in his grubby little hands, somehow already covered in sand, and pulled Sam closer until they were eye to eye. He was suddenly very still and very serious. "Don't forget your promise."

"Promise, what promise?" Sam was careful to keep his face blank, knowing how well Dean, even this mini, kiddy version of him, could read him.

"Ice cream," Dean said very slowly, making Sam's head nod at each word. "Ice cream. You get to put on the stupid sun screen and I get ice cream after, right? Right?" The way he repeated the word it was almost a threat.

Sam couldn't help but grin at the seriousness to Dean's face. The lightness and humor in those little eyes. The open and joyous smile. His brother. Happy. Smiling. "You bet. What ever flavor you want."

Dean hollered and jumped up, fist pumping in the air. "Ice cream!! Come on, Sammy!" Dean grabbed Sammy's hand and started tugging him towards the waves. "Last one in's a rotten egg!"

You're not acting, Treize had said. This is not an act; it is a life, full of life's insecurities and chances and normalcies. I don't think you're going to ever have the chance to drop in and out of character, unless you'd like them all to peg you as insane - and at the end of the day I presume that you'll be better off with everyone liking you as opposed to questioning your state of mind. Let them pry at that and then they'll pry your mask off.

Zechs was grateful for the reminder, as he was for most things delivered by Treize: ironically grateful. Take a break, have a rest, go on leave. His calendar returned Zechs stare with equanimity. Get away for a while, as though he had somewhere else to go instead of someone else to be.

Well. Very well.

Zechs filed the appropriate papers, took his allotted block leave, strode down Oz's main facility, and watched everyone salute and then grin.

'Hot date, sir?' one of his men asked.

'What do you think?' Zechs returned, and headed to the hangers to find Otto, and something to fly.

Yes amazing it is not crappy at all :( Zechs is brilliant and again I love how you make Treize feel like he's there even when he's sir not appearing in this fanfic.

"The Young Avengers have been dealt with. They're not going to listen but hopefully the whole thing with Iron Lad will stick in their memory and they'll come to us for help if they need it." Steve sat down on the workbench beside Tony, leaning back against the table. "I was thinking we could train them, lightly of course, without any actual missions until they're older. I don't know what we're going to do if they don't stop though. They're good kids, but they're minors and don't know what they want with their lives yet."

Tony snorted. "The kids will do what they want, and we'll just clean up after them and hope they don't get themselves killed. Stop worrying. You need a vacation." He didn't look up from the circuit he was tinkering with.

Steve reached out and dragged his fingers through Tony's hair. "So do you. You're working yourself crazy with the new monitoring system. You need to take a break."

Tony leaned into the touch and sighed heavily, putting his tools down with a clank. "As if either of us could afford to."

"Well, money is not an issue, Mr. Stark."

"No, that wasn't what I was talking about and you know it."

Tony and Steve fell silent.

"Oh, you shouldn't have said that."

Turning her head and opening her eyes to look at him would be far too much effort. "Shouldn't have said what?"

"'Perfect place for a relaxing holiday'," the Doctor quoted back at her, sounding so smug that she would have thrown her beach bag at him, if she could do it without getting up. Maybe she could develop magic mind powers in the next thirty seconds.

"Sun, sea, sand, alien sangria... sounds perfect to me," Donna said contentedly.

"But you've jinxed it," he insisted. "Any second now, you'll see. Invasion fleets screaming from the sky, an ancient race of sea-creatures turning up on the beach to reclaim their planet, the waves boiling into the sky..."

After a few minutes, Donna turned onto her front on the sunbed. "Any sign of that invasion fleet yet?"

"I'm sure they're on the way."

"Bored, are you?"

"I wouldn't say bored, exactly..."

"Well, tough," she told him. "I'm owed a proper holiday and I'm getting one."

He sighed.

"Any more complaining out of you and I'm signing you up for the kids' club." She pushed up her sunglasses and grinned at him over her shoulder. "And if you feel like making yourself useful for a change, there's suncream in my bag..."

Heheh, cute.

Hee! I especially love that the Doctor was kind of anticipating Donna's jinx to actually work and a bit disappointed when nothing shows up. Plus, Donna threatening to sign him up for the kids' club is just too perfect.

Castiel has seen the wonders of creation, from the birth of a star to the first time Man ever walked. He has been to the furthest reaches of existence, into the deepest mysteries that no fleshbloodbone creature could ever fathom.

But this—"I hit the ball to Sam with this?" he asks, hefting the wood instrument.

"Yup," Dean says, grinning wide and bright. "It'll be fun. Trust me."

Castiel would shrug, but such human actions are still not familiar to him. Dean has told him to give it time. He'll get used to the body eventually.

"Don't worry," Dean says, crouching down as Castiel turns back to await Sam's pitch. "We'll go to some stuffy museum for you and Sam after."

“I am not worried,” he assures Dean as he swings and misses.

Once, he could fly from side of reality to the other. Once. Now he is in a park with two human brothers attempting to play a game called baseball. A game.

Twice more, he swings at the ball Sam throws and misses, but he is not bothered. As Dean said, this is fun.

Fun. And once Dean has tired of this, they’ll go see the wonders of humanity.

waking dream - Castiel/Dean, PG, somewhat sad

[personal profile] tigriswolf 2009-08-01 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Dean is dying, bleeding out into the dustdirt of the battlefield. Sam is somewhere over the next ridge, also dying.

Castiel is exhausted, lying next to his favorite of all beings. He doesn't have the strength to heal, and Father has declared that it is the Winchesters time to go.

"Dean," Castiel whispers, placing his hand on Dean's chest. He is in his true form; Jimmy Novak was burned away by Lucifer's power. "Dean, listen to me."

Dean slowly turns his head to glance at Castiel. "Cas?" he murmurs. "Sam..."

"I can take you away," Castiel tells him. "Think of anywhere."

Castiel keeps his eyes on Dean's and slowly sinks into him. Dean remembers his car, his brother sitting in the passenger seat, the road in front of them and music blasting.

He dies in Castiel's embrace, thinking himself far away and lifetimes ago.

playdates - gennish, PG

[personal profile] tigriswolf 2009-08-01 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes, when the voices in Gabriel's head get to be too much, Elle takes Noah to the beach. They build sandcastles and sandangels, play in the waves, chase seagulls. It's the most peaceful she ever feels, spending time with Gabriel's son.

He never calls her mommy or mama. She kisses his cheek and his forehead, tickles him till he begs for mercy, laughing almost too hard to breathe.

Gabriel always smiles at her when she brings Noah back, brushes his fingers along her hand or her face. "Thank you," he says.

He never kisses her. She never mentions Sylar or her father.

(When Claire catches up to her, Elle doesn't have a chance to tell her what a mistake she's made because Sylar's sleeping in Gabriel, and he doesn't trust anyone else enough to let them take Noah away so he can have time to make the voices stop.)
