Friday: Lines From a Book

Hello everyone. As you may know, I am [livejournal.com profile] mahmfic and today is my last day of pinch-hitting for the week. You guys have been fantastic!

I hope you have fun with today's theme Lines from a book. All prompts should be quotes from novels. Pick up the closest book to you and flip to a random page, Google your favorite novel and find some quotes from it, go to Goodreads.com, search for a book and find a quote that strikes you from the novel. Though not required, it would be nice to include the source of the quote you used in your prompt for others to see.

Have a great weekend!

Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the above mentioned spoiler cut.

Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt

Some examples to get the ball rolling...

+ Doctor Who, 12th Doctor/Missy, "If you want to know what a man's like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals." (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by JK Rowling)
+ Vikings (TV), Ragnar Lothbrok/Ahtelstan, "Is your modesty worth death?" (Irrevocable by Skye Callahan)
+ Cabin Pressure, Arthur/Any, "I love you above all things, even pie." (Fool by Christopher Moore)

We are now using AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2014 collection. See further notes on this new option here.

Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out the just created lonely prompt spreadsheet. For more recent prompts to write, you can also use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community.

A/N: I thought I was doing a proper fill for Clint this time. Last line I wasn't sure of, but it hints at Clint/Natasha. I went with the line as I remembered it and stuck it in. Can fix that part later if it's wrong.

Only it's all wrong because... Oops, screwed it up again because no Bucky. Sorry, I'd give it another chance at trying to fix it, but I can't write him at all, and I wouldn't want to try because I know it would be bad. I'll put in a request for it tomorrow or later (I doubt there will be many fills tomorrow) instead. :(

People said Clint wasn't a spy. That he couldn't pull off that kind of work. He was a sniper, an assassin, but he wasn't a spy. He wasn't a good enough liar. He smiled too much. Laughed too much.

He would have laughed at that, at least. He didn't know why people thought smiling and laughing was any less of a coping mechanism than the rest of it was. Some people went dark, got silent, got mean. He didn't. He pulled pranks. He joked. He laughed.

He didn't talk about his childhood or how he'd learned to shoot. He didn't talk about the things he'd done before he joined S.H.I.E.L.D.

And he never talked about his brother.

Those things were in the past. They were done and gone. He'd stopped crying when he was a kid.

Except that was a lie.

What he'd done to Barney, however right or justified or necessary it might have been, reduced him to tears after every nightmare, every flashback, every memory. He'd pull out a joke and laugh it off, find a prank to distract everyone, or he'd find some lone perch where no one could see the tears.

It was a coping mechanism, and he was damn good at making it work.

He didn't allow anyone to see him cry.

(Well, anyone other than Natasha.)

He needs lots of hugs.

You're welcome. Sorry I missed the part about Bucky twice. :(
