The human's voice was unrecognizable. But the timbre behind it, the resonance that rattled the windows... that was unmistakable. Gabriel shuddered, all over. Next to him, Castiel froze. The brothers Winchester, who'd been standing patiently huddled around the small table with the angels poring over the latest set of clues, both looked up. Dean swore.
The new arrival ignored them both. "We've been wondering where you got to, brother. Now I see what company you've been keeping, I have to say, everything seems that much clearer."
Sam leaned over to hiss at Dean. "Another angel?"
"Archangel," Castiel said. "Raphael."
"A real son of a bitch, too," Dean added.
Gabriel refused to face him. He kept his eyes fixed on the brothers instead. "Oh boy," he said. "Here we go again. I get an atomic wedgie and get stuffed in a locker. Is this really what gives you your jollies, Raphael? Don't you have something better to do?"
A flash of white teeth. Nothing more terrifying than an angel's smile. "Of course I do," he said. "You think I'm here for you, Gabriel? It's our lesser brother. He invited me to come after him, so here I am." He opened his hands, and lightning and fire crackled along the surface of his palms.
Castiel stepped into a fighting stance, girding himself against an assault yet to come. Raphael raised one hand.
"Cas." Gabriel's voice was low.
"What?"
"Run. Now."
And he whirled, his face suddenly full of rage, and thrust out his hands. A shockwave of energy and heat flew across the room. Raphael recoiled.
"Sorry, Raph," Gabriel said, "but I haven't been able to respect you ever since they named a Ninja Turtle for you." And with another push of his hands, he slammed Raphael backward.
Gabriel looked over his shoulder. "What the hell are you doing?" he screamed to a stunned trio. "Run!"
Dean was the first to take action. As he grabbed Castiel to drag him away, he heard Gabriel's groan as an unseen blow knocked him backward. He redoubled his steps.
They made it out just before the house went up in flames.
