The blast shook the ground and nearly drove Dean off his feet. He stumbled forward, and it was only Cas' sudden appearance in front of him that kept him from tasting gravel. "Shit," Dean muttered into the worn cloth of his shirt. "Thanks, Cas. Owe you."
Sam was staring up at the tower of smoke billowing into the sky. "We should help him," he said.
"Help him? Are you nuts?" Dean shouted over the sound of another tree trunk snapping under the weight of the shockwaves. The battle going on just a few hundred yards away was causing the whole area to echo with otherworldly sounds. Flashes of color lit the sky.
"He's not strong enough," Castiel said matter-of-factly. "If Raphael wants to kill him, that's exactly what he'll do."
"So what?" Dean jumped as another loud pop split his eardrums. The sky lit up yellow and then returned to its normal color. "We've been trying to kill him for years. He's got it coming."
"You don't mean that," Sam said, pressing forward to get between Castiel and Dean. "He's been helping us."
"Some definition of help," Dean spat. Then he took another look at Sam's face and sighed. "Look, I know, I don't like that we're just leaving him, either. But he called in the cavalry to save Cas' life, and if we don't get as far away as we can, what's the point?"
"That's just it," said Sam, and again his gaze lifted toward the rising flames. "Gabriel's been protecting us. He's cut all his ties to Heaven. Dean, we're the only cavalry he's got."
Dean looked at Cas. The angel nodded at him briefly.
Together, they turned around and headed back toward the fray.
