"What, buddy?" Buck asked casually as he turned toward the sea.
To his horror, the water was receding rapidly... a tsunami! Just then the warning horns went off.
He went to grab Chris, who said, "Wait!"
It was said firmly. An adult tone of voice that Buck had never heard from Chris before. It made Buck hesitate.
"I can do this." That was a declarative sentence, not a question. There was not a seed of doubt in those words.
Chris stood up straighter to face the oncoming wave, his arms wide.
Buck watched as Chris closed his eyes and tilted his head back. Confidence radiated from every pore. Buck stood behind Chris and held on to the small child with all of his might.
He watched as the huge wave approached the pier and then... it lessened. Oh, there was still a wave and they both were totally drenched. But the wave was smaller, less destructive.
Buck held Chris in place until Chris relaxed with a small laugh.
"Didn't know I could do that!" Chris grinned.
"You and I and your dad are going to have a long talk!" Buck growled.
Walking to the car in wet clothes was not fun.
"Oh, wait!" Chris said. He touched Buck's hip and... they were both dry!
"Thanks," was all Buck could say.
Eddie was already home when they arrived.
"Have a good day, mijo?" Eddie swung Chris into a hug.
"We lost my crutches but I stopped a big wave!" Chris said proudly.
"A tsunami," Buck said. "A big one."
Eddie has the grace to look embarrassed. "Oh. Well..."
"I think this needs some coffee," Buck said.
"Inside, then!" Eddie said cheerfully for Chris' benefit.
"And he dried us off, after," Buck added.
Eddie insisted Chris take a nap. Buck went to the kitchen while he waited.
There was a barely-heard discussion between Chris and Eddie about doing magic and but it's Buck! that Buck tried to not listen to.
Eddie came back and Buck handed him a beer. "I think this needs some alcohol."
They went to the patio to sit.
Eddie sighed. "It's not that I didn't want to tell you..."
"I understand about keeping a secret like that," Buck nodded. "It's just so... unexpected." He stared at Eddie. "If Chris can do that, what sort of things can you do?"
"We work with Storms," Eddie admitted. "I can create and control Storms in the area around me."
Buck considered. "Why didn't you do anything about..."
"When it's a natural storm, it's best to let it happen," Eddie said. "Gaia is the ultimate Power and there are... consequences when you fight against her."
"Will anything happen because of what Chris did?" Buck was alarmed.
"Shouldn't be," Eddie shrugged. "He let the wave happen, so that's a good thing."
"He prevented a lot of people's deaths," Buck replied.
"He saved you," Eddie said. "He told me that was why he did it."
"Now what?" Buck asked, taking a drink of his beer.
"Nothing," Eddie replied firmly.
"Just like that?"
"Just like that!"
Buck tilted his head and considered.
"Okay."
He saw Eddie relax. "Thank you. It is kinda nice to let someone know, to be honest."
"Does it run in the family?"
"Abuela has an Earth Magic," Eddie admitted. "But it skipped everyone else. So it's mostly me and Chris."
"If there's anything I can do, just ask," Buck offered.
"Oh. Don't let Chris hear that, he'll be practicing on you!" Eddie laughed.
"He's still my favorite Diaz, you know!" Buck grinned.
