"I have been, and always have been, your friend," he said, and was sad that the other man did not recognize the words, though of course there was no reason that he should. "It would work better if I just show you how I came to be here, and why I say that we are friends."
He placed his fingers on the touch-telepathy points and waited for permission to perform a mind meld on the human. When Jim nodded, he slipped easily into the well-known landscape of his mind, but was surprised by the differences he found. He paid attention to the task at hand, explaining his relationship with Nero. Despite his best efforts, he let some of his emotions spill over, and the young man's face was open and shaken as he had not been when they began their conversation.
"My apologies," he said quickly, "I did not intend to overwhelm you."
"It's not your fault," he answered, still breathing quickly, “I never realized that I – well, the other me – was this important to anyone. Usually they just want me out of the way as quickly as possible.” He grinned, but Spock could tell that these words were born of real feelings.
“I have always enjoyed your companionship. And I can tell that your Doctor McCoy cares deeply for you. He did in my version of events and clearly he does in yours as well.” They both lapsed into silence, thinking of their own lives. Spock felt the familiar ache of never seeing his best friend again. As similar as he might be, this was not his Jim Kirk, and seeing him would only remind him of something he would never have.
