They have their orders to come back to Earth. Their five year mission is done as soon as the Enterprise reaches the dock. It will be weird that after five years of seeing each other every day, often spending shore leave with each other, they will be pulled apart. Some of them will stay together as they have already received their news orders. Jim will stay captain of the Entreprise and Bones will stay too, mostly because Starfleet Command still believes that Jim Kirk needs someone who keeps an eye on him. Chapel, though, is promoted to Chief Senoir Medical Officer on the brand-new ship Indefatigable. Scotty has offers from Starfleet's shipyard and many prestigious universities. He's keeping it a secret which offer he accepted. The Surprise, a small scout ship, waits for her Captain Pavel Andreivich Chekov and her First Officer Hikaru Sulu. Of course, Starfleet would have been mad to separate those two. Spock and Uhura will leave the active Starfleet for New Vulcan. The settlement needs every Vulcan alive and both of them are immensely valuable additions for the diplomatic branch of Starfleet.
The official passage ceremony has already been held and for the last minutes before they reach Earth it's just the eight of them on the bridge. It's a strange mixture of sadness and hope when they sit and stand here and tell ancdotes with a teary and a laughing eye. What happened to them, from their first, accidental mission where they saved Earth through all five years welded them together. 'Warp Zero. Earth.' Sulu announces. He carefully maneuvers the ship to the dock. Earth shines blue and white and green in front of them.
Jim hugs everyone, even Spock, who raises an eyebrows but doesn't say anything. Then he teases Bones because Uhura gave him a goodbye kiss on the cheek. Chekov begins something that could easily have been a speech until Sulu elbows him in the ribs and he stops and hugs everyone. Chapel embraces everyone so tightly that Jim teasingly threatens to imprison her with attempted muder. Scotty wipes some tears from his eyes and in a moment of significant history Spock and Bones shake hands and tell each other to take care. They're the last one's to leave the ship. They stand in the dock and suddenly it's over.
