“Find the Turk and destroy it, no matter what.” John instructs him one final time. Derek and his group are set to leave for the past in a couple of hours. “Can you do that?” Derek knows he’s not asking about the Turk, he’s asking about Wisher, no Andy Goode. “I’ll get it done.” Derek promises. Wisher gave his okay earlier: “Something else?” “What do you mean?” John asks back. “What about you? I could join you when I’m done. Protect your younger self.” “Don’t bother,” John answers but he looks sideways when he does, not at Derek and Derek knows that there’s something John’s not telling him: “Destroying SkyNet will be more than enough.” There are things Derek wants to ask: why me? Why now? Why do send me on a one-way trip to the past? But he doesn’t. John doesn’t have any problems to lie to him if he does ask, or even worse he might tell the truth but Derek’s not sure that that’s a truth he wants to hear.
He regrets not asking the first time he looks at John Connor’s sixteen-year old self and discovers that he looks like Kyle. He is sick but everyone blames the meds for that. Sarah and John don’t come out and say it but he knows that John is Kyle’s son. If he could ask John questions now, it wouldn’t be: why me? Or why now? It would be “Did you know that I’m your uncle when you kissed me?” Deep down, he knows the answer already. He remembers only too clearly the last time he and John spoke, among other things they did during that few hours, and how John wouldn’t look at him. John knew. As ridiculous as it sounds John knew of their relation and still made the first move.
