“I love a rainy night,” Samdong said.

Jason glanced over at him, startled out of sending a text message to Pilsook.

Samdong had been sitting so quietly that Jason had almost forgotten he was there.

“Good thing you’re Korean. It rains all the time in Korea.” Jason looked back down at his phone.

Being away from Pilsook was no fun, but where Jason had done most of his schooling in America, he was the best choice to help Samdong get settled into his new life: new school, new record company, new apartment.

Samdong rested his head against the glass and closed his eyes. “I used to hate the sound of the rain before. When I was a kid it meant I couldn’t go out to play. As I got older it meant — trouble. If not flooding, then a leaking roof or — something.”

He was smiling.

He was, Jason noticed, clutching that tuning fork in his hand. Where Pilsook had absolute pitch, Samdong had perfect relative pitch. As long as he could imagine one note, he could pitch his voice accordingly and sing even if he couldn’t hear.

And sometimes he couldn’t hear.

“When my ears are ringing, I can’t hear anything else — but the sound of the rain is so soothing.”

Jason was probably the least emotionally stunted out of everyone on the team, though given how Jin Gook was like a brick wall, they probably wasn’t saying much.
Samdong was naively honest about a lot of things, but he was still guarded about his emotions. Jason couldn’t really blame him.

Even now, Samdong was probably wondering whether he should have given up a chance at a relationship with Hyemi to pursue his dream of being a singer.
Jason was lucky that he had both Pilsook and music in his life.

Was his presence rubbing salt in Samdong’s wounds?

“The sound of the rain makes me feel less alone,” Samdong said.

Jason swatted him. “Hey, I’m right here.” He pocketed his phone and stood. “Come on.”

Samdong opened his eyes. His gaze was dark and melancholy.

Jason held out a hand. “We’re in LA. You have to come get spicy tacos with me. You’re not really from LA till you’ve tried all the good food. Gotta get started now. Come on.”

Samdong blinked, but he allowed Jason to help him to his feet. “It’s raining.”

“And I have an umbrella. Let’s go.”

Samdong nodded and followed Jason to the door.

He was still clutching the tuning fork Hyemi had given him even though Jason hadn’t said anything about them going singing. One day he’d be willing to leave it behind.

Till then, there was spicy tacos.
