Will paced the floor furiously, hitting redial on his phone for what seemed like the twentieth time in the past half hour. While containing an Abnormal, Kate had gotten separated from the rest of the team and she should have been back by now. This wasn’t the first time this had happened. Kate seemed to get separated a lot, and Will wouldn’t have been so worried if she just answered her damn phone. It rang repeatedly before it went to her answering machine and Will tried again. This time it rang twice before she picked up.
“What? I’m busy!” she snapped. There was a lot of noise in the background, a PA system, some beeping, voices. It would have been difficult to hear her over all of it if she hadn’t yelled at him. Normally he’d have been relieved to hear her voice and just know that she was still alive. But he was tired, dirty, and already on edge from worrying about her, and her irritated tone was just…not at all helpful.
“Where the hell are you? Are you on your way back?” Will growled.
“No,” she responded testily. “I am at the hospital. Throwing up blood is apparently frowned upon.”
Of all the things he’d expected her to say, this was not one of them. “Why the hell are you in the hospital?” he asked stupidly.
“…Did you miss the part about throwing up blood?” She paused before adding, “Oh, and I got shot.”
Which, of course, set Will off again. “How the hell did you get shot?”
“Is every question you ask me going to involve the word ‘hell’?”
Will sighed, pressed his free hand to his temple and tried to massage the headache away. “Which hospital? I’m coming to get you.”
“That’s not necessary—” Kate began, but Will cut her off.
