Leverage, team, Time Goes By

(ok, so, in one tiny, tiny way, this sort of crosses over with Human Target.)

Alec looked up from his computer, rubbed a hand over his eyes, and glanced at the calendar hanging on the wall. The calendar was a tourist souvenir with pictures of New Zealand that Parker had brought back with her the last time. There weren't many dates marked on it, but one date stood out. A few squares over from today's date, the calendar was marked with a big gold-star sticker, and two words – Leverage Day.

Leverage Day was a tradition that they'd instituted years back, when the children were small and they found themselves juggling kids and jobs more and more often. So they created Leverage Day, the one day in the year when they swore they'd all meet up somewhere.

Alec got up from his desk and walked outside, heading for the climbing wall where he knew Parker would be. He shouted up to her, “Parker!”

She jumped down off the wall, then turned to face him with a smile. “Yes?”

They weren't husband and wife, at least legally. They'd never seen the need to quantify their relationship in that way. They were just Alec and Parker, and they had been for almost thirty years.

“You know what day it is in a few days?”

“Leverage day,” she said. “You thought I'd forget?”

“Of course not. Do you think we should bring the kids?”

Their kids, Amy and Spencer, both lived on the mainland. Spencer was a freshman at UCLA, and Amy was in med school at Columbia. They were both vaguely aware that their parents' multi-million dollar fortune had not been acquired through entirely legal means, but they didn't know the specifics.

Parker shrugged. “We're meeting at Nate's again, right? Claire will be there, so I guess we ought to.”

“'kay, I'll get in touch, make sure their schedules are okay...”

A couple of days later, Alec and Parker were pulling up in the driveway of Nate's house. Amy and Spencer had decided to meet them there, which made things easier.

It always surprised Alec that Nate had chosen such a simple life after he retired from the life of crime. Unlike the mansion that he and Parker lived in, Nate's house was an ordinary detached house in a quiet, friendly neighbourhood. He had moved there after he and Sophie had tried living together with their young daughter Claire. It hadn't worked terribly well. Claire had moved in when she was sixteen, having lived with Sophie before then.

Alec knocked on the door and Claire opened it, greeting them with a smile and telling them that everyone else was already there. Claire slipped out into the kitchen, where Amy and Spencer were, and the three young people chatted together leaving the older generation to talk.

As Alec sat down, he looked at his friends. Sophie looked just as glamorous as always, and Nate seemed, if anything, happier than usual. Obviously the simple life suited him, he thought. Then he looked over at Eliot in the corner. Though he was in his sixties, Eliot was still tougher than anyone Alec had ever met. For ten years now, he'd been based out of Vancouver, working as a private security contractor. For some reason that Alec wasn't quite sure of, Eliot was now going by a different name... at least where business was concerned, he was going by Christopher, even if the team still called him Eliot.
