They crouch along the edge of the building, looking like a line of gargoyles as they listen for any sign of trouble. These are the last few minutes of their real job and anything can happen.
Then the first streaks of color race across the sky and almost as one they turn to greet the sun. They wait only a few minutes, letting the sunlight warm their stiff muscles before they launch themselves into the air.
Like the flock of bats they model themselves after they return the their cave to roost.
They patch themselves up and give each other what comfort they can before they part to fall in to fitful sleep.
