Dé Céadaoin: Cultural Differences

Good Morning, beloved ones!

It's Wednesday (I can't believe I've made it this far!), and it's time for a new theme: Cultural differences. Let's explore!

It's nice to feed the beloved codemonkeys proper prompts, like these.

Star Trek: TOS, Kirk/Spock, cultural differences between a human and a Vulcan.

Supernatural, Dean/Cas or Sam/Gabe, human vs angel

For crossovers:

Harry Potter/Star Trek, Spock/McGonagall, an old witch and an even older Vulcan.

*feeds bananas to codemonkeys*

Burn Notice, Fiona, She can't find proper tea in this town. Just what would she do to get it?

[identity profile] daria234.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Just how is she supposed to hogtie anyone in this town without a good breakfast tea?

Well?

She waits for Michael to think of a good answer. Really, he is wondering how he is the one left scrambling to explain, when she's the one that convinced him to raid an import/export business (while she none too gently locked all the employees in the toilet).

He exclaimed, "You said ,and I quote, 'We have to make sure the GOODS don't get into the WRONG HANDS because there are people out there who would do DESPICABLE THINGS!"

She rolled her eyes. "Exactly. Have you seen the way you Americans brew tea? It's barbaric."

Little Women, Amy, France isn't exactly what she expected it to be.

[identity profile] chiana606.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
((notes: Thanks for another Little Women prompt. Channeling Les Miserables and the Scarlet Pimpernel here.))

Amy remembered very well the wonder of her first visit to France -- Paris with her glittering buildings and even brighter dance halls, the art and the operas , the scent of flowers in the air as she walked through the surrounding villages. She remembered the charming men who kissed her hand as if she really was somebody, and the tall women for whom dress was an art form as engrossing as any of the myriad that Amy pursued.

By the time her second trip rolled around, Amy was a seasoned traveler. That wasn’t to say that she didn’t anticipate a pleasant return, but there was a part of her that longed for the comforts of home and her sisters -- it was the very same part of her that carried Laurie’s letters in her pocket against her heart, perhaps a bit guiltily now that she knew what had conspired between him and Jo.

She was walking with Flo one day, when the heel of her shoe got caught in one of the sewer grates which were all over the city, and she had to grab onto her cousin’s arms to keep from toppling over.

“Where is your mind today, Amy dear?” Flo asked with a gentle smile as Amy righted herself.

“Up in the clouds somewhere, it would seem,” Amy said, with an attempt at laughing. Her foot had come free of her shoe, and there would be a black mark upon her new silk stockings from where they had touched the ground. She heard something rustle beneath the grate, and had to swallow what would’ve been a very undignified squeak. There seemed that there was a light burning somewhere deep below.

The two girls hurried on their way.

“I’ve heard,” said Flo in a whisper, “that the sewer goes on for thousands of miles down there, and there are those who use it when they need to travel in secret.”

“Don’t be a goose,” Amy whispered back. She wondered just why she was whispering, and added a bit more loudly, “It’s nothing but water down there. Anyone who tried to cross it would drown, and if they didn’t the odor would cling to their clothes and give their secret away.”

It made Amy feel very world wise to say such a thing, but the rest of the walk was silent, for she was thinking of the sewers. Could it be possible that beautiful Paris contained a whole other world that she did not know about? In Concord she could trust that what she saw was what there was, but Paris was dark and light and teaming with more layers than she could hope to discover. As her feet carefully trod the neat cobblestones above, her mind was lost in the maze below.

Jo would love it.

How very glad Amy was of the letters in her pocket!

Amy was discouraged from reading French books. Her aunts assured her and Flo that there was nothing in them for good American girls. French books were treated as signs of danger, especially the yellow ones. It was another part of that underworld which Amy was beginning to believe really did exist.

There were beggars as well. There were beggars everywhere of course, but the ones in Paris were a different thing altogether. There were times when she would look at one and think it was an old woman, only to realize at second glance that it was a young child on the verge of death. She had known all of her life how to treat the poor -- her mother had taught her that, and taught her well, but more than a few of the specimens that Amy saw seemed beyond the help of a thousand Marmees.

It was on another walk with Flo that Amy noticed a crowd of such people gathered near a palace which they had hoped to get a glance of.

“I wonder what they’re doing out in such numbers, and in broad daylight!” Flo asked as they hurried by, not wanting to get too close, but each undoubtedly curious.

It was then that Amy noticed something bright against the sky. A blade. The guillotine, and these people had turned out to watch it.

“I’m sure I don’t want to know,” Amy whispered, this time seeing the prudence in keeping quiet.

They almost collided with the old woman in front of them.

“Oh, excuse me,” Amy was flustered enough to say, before switching into clumsy French. The woman wanted money, and would tell them their fortunes in return for it, Amy was made to understand this through a mixture of words and gestures.

Both girls gave her their coins, and received fortunes which may have been happy or grave, for all that they understood of them. Towards the end of Amy’s the woman began to speak of someone dying, and Amy quite nearly went pale, until she remembered the guillotine. Surely death was in the air, and terrible though it was, it had no special bearing against her.

The letters, tucked against her heart, were a talisman.

When Amy reached the hotel, there was a telegram waiting for her, informing her that Beth had passed on.

She spent forever thinking over what to write Laurie, and when it came down to it, the only words she could manage were a broken, “Please come”.

He never received the letter, but it didn’t matter, because he was already on his way.

Because he grew up around Charlie, and all little brothers try to impress their big brothers, Don has a fairly good grasp of advanced mathmatics. He can't actually do the advanced mathmatics but he isn't standing there looking like an idiot when he gets roped into taking Charlie to math conferances and somehow gets cornered by a random proffessor.

Charlie's told him that some of his colleagues were impressed not only with Don's grasp of some of the more obscure branches of math but also with his stories about how he used those concepts to solve crimes.

Most of the actual math still goes over his head but Charlie is always good at explaining things in layman's terms.

Charlie had been incredibly nervous the first time he'd been asked to work for the military. No one on his team had had any background in mathmatics and, being only fifteen, he'd had no one his age to talk to either. It had been lonely.

It had taken him a long time to figure out how to explain things that seemed so simple to him to people who had struggled to pass geometry and calculus.

When he goes to work with his brother the team does their best to make him fit in, though wether from genuine friendliness or from a desire to not piss of Don Charlie has never found out. He's not sure he wants to know.

Don and his team has made it possible to understand the way law enforcement works and to be able to more easily understand their reasonings and take them into account in his calculations.

It's also helped him to fit in almost seamlessly into any new law enforcement group when requested by someone other than his brother.

Don had heard from other teams how much they had enjoyed working with Charlie.

"He isn't all high and mighty like some of the so called experts we're forced to work with. He's almost like one of us." one agent had said, high praise indeed.
