Castiel wasn’t supposed to go back. He wasn’t supposed to interfere with how time and life played out for humans. He knew doing so could change the world for the worst, but a world without two Winchesters; it wasn’t what it should have been.
He waited ten years. Ten years of watching Dean lose his will to live, to fight the monsters he was facing. Dean couldn’t survive without Sam. All he had in him were a few good years. He gave up facing an angry spirit. A world without any Winchesters was a world destined for another apocalypse. The sun didn’t shine. The air seemed heavier. Angels were ready for so much of the darkness to disappear they were ready to fight for another apocalypse. So Castiel ignored every order and remembered what Balthazar and Gabriel had taught him. He remembered Sam and Dean Winchester, Team Free Will. He went back to save Sam.
And despite the pain they went through having Sam back– it was worth it. The world wasn’t right without two Winchesters in it and if no one was the wiser of how much he had changed, did he really change anything at all?
