smallhobbit: (Holmes Top Hat)

Both Lestrade and Holmes were convinced that Percival Grosvenor had been murdered by one of his sons, but the evidence was contradictory for, unless all three had been working together, which seemed implausible, especially given under the terms of the will where the eldest son was the main beneficiary. It was therefore a surprise when a constable arrived one morning to say Lestrade had requested our immediate presence and sent a police vehicle to convey us to him.

Lestrade showed us into the dining room, where we found all three brothers sitting around the table, all dead. Cautiously Holmes sniffed the glasses they had been drinking from and I considered the corpses. They had all died from poison and Holmes confirmed it would have been in the glasses.

"But why all three of them?" Lestrade asked. "Did the murderer make a mistake and accidentally poison himself?"

Holmes shook his head. "No. I think we can conclude that Charles killed his father, but I learnt late last night that he is seriously ill and has but a few months to live. He opted for a quick death, rather than a long drawn out one. But, as he had no wish for either of his younger brothers to inherit the family wealth, he chose to kill them too."
