It had only gone six months since they lost Mary and none of them seemed to be function very well. Maybe Sam, but John wanted to believe it was because he was so little. He don't know what he would have been doing if he hadn't had Dean and Sam.
He wanted the revenge and he also wanted his boys to be safe and have a good life. He would try to manage to do both, and that’s why they were in Colorado. They where in the middle of no where, just because he been told to see this hunter Daniel Elkins.
Dean looked like he was curious in the place, but he didn't know he didn't speak much. He did light up when we did stop to buy presents to Sammy. Most was clothes, as he seems to grow so fast. John let Dean choose a present, and he went for a car.
Later they gave Sammy the presents, and he seemed to like the car most. It didn't surprise John, as the clothes were something he would have needed anyway.
