The phone call comes halfway through an important meeting with Harvey. Donna steps into his office, a bemused expression on her face, and says there's someone on the line for Mike.

"Tell them he'll call them back," Harvey dismisses with a wave of his hand, eyes glued to the page. This merger is important; Jessica will kill him if he fucks this up.

Donna coughs. "It's your son's school," she says as Mike's expression falls and he stands with a start. "They say he's too ill and needs to be taken home."

Harvey finally looks up, glancing from a composed Donna to the horror on Mike's face. "Excuse me? Son?"

Before Harvey can question him, Mike hurries out of the office and towards Donna's booth. Harvey and Donna watch as he talks seriously into the phone, forehead creasing into a hard frown, before he finally hangs up.

"I'm sorry," Harvey says, "I've got to go."

He doesn't even wait for permission - just flies out of the building like he's being chased by hell hounds.

"Oh fuck me," Harvey says with feeling.

*

Mike hasn't visited his grandmother in a week, Josh is sick, and Harvey's all-important merger is tomorrow.

Life just isn't fair.

"Dad?"

Mike bustles back into Josh's room with his phone in one hand and forced smile on his face. "Are you all right, kiddo? You don't want to be sick again, do you?"

Josh shakes his head, hair flopping into his eyes. Mike perches on the side of his son's bed and smooths the strands back with a genuine smile of fondness. His grandmother always says that Josh looks just like him as a kid.

"Will you read me a story?" Josh asks in a quiet voice, like he knows his father's too busy to indulge him, and Mike feels so much guilt pressing against his chest he can hardly breathe.

"Of course," Mike nods, doesn't stop nodding. "Which one?"

Josh pulls a book out from its hiding place under the covers, and Mike smiles at his choice. "All righty, then. Snuggle in, little man. Comfy? Good. In a land of myth and magic..."

"So will you care to explain what happened yesterday?" Harvey asks the second Mike walks through the door.

Mike sighs. He's tired, having stayed up all night reading Harvey's papers, and he unceremoniously dumps it all on Harvey's desk without preamble.

"Look, I'm sorry I didn't tell you, but I really needed this job, and I knew you wouldn't hire me if I told you about Josh." Mike shoves his hands in his suit pockets, unable to meet Harvey's eye. "No one would hire me if they knew. I'm a single dad under the age of thirty, with no qualifications. Why do you think I worked for Trevor? I was desperate, man. I've got a kid to feed and look after, not just my grandma."

Harvey takes in Mike with a blank face. "The mother?"

Mike's eyes darken. "She upped and left after giving birth to him. I was nineteen. Grandma looked after him, but then she fell ill, and I had to step up."

Harvey is quiet for a moment. The sound of Donna's fingernails against the keyboard is loud even through the door.

Eventually he says, "All right. You have a kid, fine. Just no more lies. I catch you keeping anything else from me, you're out. And if it affects your work, you're out. Understood?"

Mike's shoulders relax visibly, but his face stays impassive as he nods. "Thanks, Harvey."

Harvey waves a hand at the door. "Now get out. I've got work to do before the merger." He picks up Mike's work as Mike heads for the door. "Who's looking after your kid right now?" Harvey suddenly asks, Mike's hand on the glass.

"Jen," Mike answers with a tight smile. "I had to call in a favour. Didn't really have any other options."

Harvey nods, and then Mike is gone.

With the excuse of stepping out to meet a client, it's three in the afternoon when Harvey knocks on Mike's apartment door. It's answered by a familiar blonde girl, who looks confused by Harvey's presence.

"You're Mike's boss, right?" Jenny asks, staring at Harvey's slicked back hair and immaculate suit.

"Harvey Specter," Harvey introduces himself, hand extended. "I met with a client for a late lunch, and Mike wanted me to check on his son."

Jenny shakes Harvey's hand. "Oh, okay, come in. Josh is in his bedroom reading. He's feeling better than this morning; he was vomiting constantly. Poor Mike didn't want to leave him."

Harvey's face is unreadable as Jenny leads him into Josh's bedroom. There, a young boy of no more than six is sitting in his bed, a hardback novel open on his lap. He looks up as Jenny and Harvey enter.

"Josh, this is Mr Specter, your dad's boss."

"Call me Harvey," Harvey says, taking in the similar features that Josh shares with his father. He imagines this is what Mike looked like as a child, minus the pale yet flushed skin that indicates Josh's illness.

"Can I get you a drink?" Jenny asks, turning to Harvey.

"Just a glass of water." Jenny nods and disappears, leaving Harvey to make his way over to Josh.

"Is Dad still at work?" Josh asks, closing his novel after placing a bookmark against his page.

"Yes," Harvey smiles. "Sorry. He'll be back before dinner, I'm sure."

"I know," Josh says, and Harvey is surprised when Josh puts a little hand on his. It's warm and grips tight. "Mr Specter, you'll make sure Dad is okay, right? He never sleeps, and he's always working when he's not looking after me and Great-Grandma. I'm scared he'll get ill like me too."

Harvey stares seriously at Josh for a moment. Josh Ross, who's six years old and so young and naive.

"Yes," he finally nods. "I'll look after your father."

Josh's eyes are big and sombre. "Do you promise?"

Harvey doesn't blink. "Yes."

At last, a smile lifts Josh's face. "Thanks."

Harvey tries to ignore the flutter in his stomach as he tries to change the subject, tapping the novel on Josh's lap to distract him. "So you like to read?"

"Yeah," Josh nods with a smile that is Mike's - all Mike's. "I love it more than anything in the world, except Dad."

"Of course you do," Harvey says. He leaves fives minutes later, barely touching his water, and goes back to work.

"Josh had a visitor today."

Mike steps out of his grateful hug and frowns at Jenny. "Who?"

"Your boss. Harvey Specter, is it?" Jenny watches Mike make quick work of his tie and suit jacket, flinging them over the sofa. "He said you wanted him to check up on Josh."

"Really?" Mike hides his surprise as he walks past her, towards Josh's room. His son doesn't hear him standing in the doorway as he reads, absorbed in the world of the novel.

Mike smiles.
