After all, the man had died. Died in Connor's arms, even, and yet here he is. Alive and healthy.
It's creeping Connor out.
Of course, he could be a clone - but he's so, so...animated, and Connor moves closer, trying to get a closer look.
But he's not a clone, he's real - really, really real, right down to the last grin and sardonic eyebrow lifting, and Connor has to force himself not to throw his arms around Nick in a tight hug because. Because the man has no idea where he is or who Connor is, and he's never heard of an anomaly, Abby, Lester, Captain Becker, Sarah, his sort-of-ex-wife or Stephen. Never heard of the Arc, either, and it's possible Connor should have 'phoned in and informed someone before persuading Nick to join him for a coffee and telling him super-secret-national-secrets.
It's Nick, though, and Connor's never really been able to control himself completely around the professor. So he buys him coffee, and he persuades him back to the Arc, and he stays with him through all the tests and...
...and accompanies Nick to his office, which no one has had the heart to clean out (far enough away from all the action, at least that survived), and Connor gives himself a second when Nick turns to examine the anomaly model to let his heart ache until it feels like it's going to burst in his chest. By the time Nick turns around again, Connor has himself under control - or so he thinks, but Nick's always been too damned perceptive when it suits him, and Connor suddenly finds himself with Nick mere inches away, and he can't quite bring himself to not touch.
Later, after Connor has broken down and cried and been held and hugged and kissed, he twists in Nick's arms on the battered old sofa in Nick's office to look at him.
"Stay?" he asks, and makes himself meet that sharp gaze.
