“I never meant for any of this to happen,” Castiel whispers, looking down at his shoes.

Dean knows that, he really does – he knows it as well as he knows his own name that Cas would never ever set out to hurt him, that everything Cas does, he does to try and help.

But that doesn’t fix it, not by a long shot. Dean still hurts, Sam’s still got Lucifer hanging around in his head, and Bobby’s still dead. The world is still well on its way to ending again, and this time there won’t be any kind of assistance from powers above or below.

Cas looks up at him, then, in the silence. Dean sees the fear and hurt in his eyes, just this side of terror, and he breaks a little. God, Cas is standing in front of him, and he looks like he’s about to fall apart.

“I know,” he mumbles, and crosses the room. “Just, please, stay.”

The words are out of his mouth before he’s registered them, but there’s a shimmer of something that fills the room, and he’s got his arms around his angel.

“Forever, if you wish it.”

Dean’s pretty sure he does.
