To let go of the masks of trickster god and just let his grace loose from his tightly reined in control. To release the fear and simply trust, as sweetly and innocently as a child. The way he hasn't since before the fall of Lucifer.
Gabriel always acts like he's on camera, the trickster persona built around the need to hide, to present himself as something other than what he is. The archangel appears only off screen.
Like now.
When Sam stands before Gabriel, naked and worshiping; not like a lesser being to a higher one, but as one man to another. The way only lovers can.
Like when Sam's large hands land so gently on Gabriel's skin, as though he's afraid that too rough a touch will cause Gabriel to startle and fly away like a wild bird.
Like when Sam kisses Gabriel like he's precious.
Like when Sam stares at Gabriel like he can see through all the masks to the very center of Gabriel's grace and what he sees is more than worth any pain he may endure when the cameras roll.
Gabriel allows himself to be the angel Sam believes in, but only here and now or in places like this. When it's just them and there is no one to see and judge.
When the only being that might be a witness obviously doesn't mind what is happening.
