It's late, and Dean is out at a bar. There's just three of them in the room: Sam, Gabriel, and Lucifer. Two of them are trying to ignore the other, but Lucifer doesn't like to be ignored. He loves the attention that has doubled since an angel came into the mix. He also loves the fact that his mere existence affects them, that he has so neatly put a wedge between them. It's hard to have a relationship when the Devil is watching, commenting, laughing. It's even harder when Lucifer whispers in Sam's ear all the things he did in the cage, until Sam can no longer stand to be touched. Lucifer makes him associate touch with pain, makes him associate all angels with pain, until it's hard for him to be in the same room as Gabriel.
Gabriel fights back, of course. He uses everything in his arsenal to cleanse Sam's mind and soul of his tormentor. It works, for awhile, but Lucifer always manages to find his way back. Then he smiles and asks if Gabriel is really serious about getting rid of him; asks if maybe he's still here because Gabriel misses his big brother. Gabriel always replies with some snarky comment, but Lucifer can see it in his eyes that his words have struck gold. Sam sees it too, and that is just one more blow to his already haemorrhaging psyche. He tells Gabriel to go, that he wants to sleep. Gabriel opens his mouth, but the words don't come. He reluctantly touches Sam's forehead, and the human falls into a deep sleep. The Archangel then turns to glare at Lucifer. The Devil smiles, pleased with his work, as he disappears back into Sam's unconscious.
