Fill - Memories

It had been years since Buffy passed the baton to the next slayer. She was already too old for all the slaying business for even longer than that, but she found it hard to give up the only thing she ever knew. However, once she let go things became so much better – she was able to focus on her personal life, able to finish school and find a real, mortal-world job that enabled her to buy a car, and later a house, and everything she needed. Really, she couldn’t have a better life, she knew that. She had a loving husband, two very talented children, true friends she would entrust her life with at any given moment and she could afford to take a vacation every once in a while.
All of that didn’t change the fact that she still missed the good old days. Right, it was a nightmare – spending every other night walking around graveyards, looking for demons and vampires to slay or another opportunity to save the day. It was frustrating when no one knew what she was going through or why her grades were dropping and how hard it was for her to manage to sustain a lousy passing grade just so she could continue to the next year.
Really, it was a relief when it was her time to give it up and let someone else deal with all this underworld shit.
No longer fearing her life on every passing day, no longer pulling all-nighters to search dark allies, no longer keeping secrets. She was happy now.
Now, all alone in the moonlight, when her kids were already fast asleep hours ago and so was her husband, she allowed herself to dwell a little bit on the past. It wasn’t easy, but she loved it. It kept her alive – not in the simple, physical meaning but in the way she knew she was living, and knew she meant something important to the world. She smiled, thinking of the old days, recalling all the times Xander and Willow were there to help her, and did so gladly – even before Willow found out she was a powerful witch and, well, Xander never really had any superpowers, but his strong friendship and glowing courage.
She let out a sigh. Sometimes she really missed all that – the action, the thrill, the –
“Buffy, why aren’t you asleep yet?” A soft, low voice cut through her thoughts, and she looked up to see her gorgeous, perfect husband staring at the door. “I woke up and didn’t find you there. You worried me.”
“Why? Because I was sitting some time on our balcony? The old times are gone, Angel,” she said, but despite the implied bitterness in her words she was smiling, and she wasn’t really scolding him. She took his hand as he offered it to her to help her up, finding herself being pulled into a warm embrace.
“I know they are, and I’m happy it’s so. Let’s get back inside and head to bed, alright?”
How could Buffy say no to that? She nodded, and let out a soft, content sound when she felt his soft lips pressed to her head. He led her back into the house, closing the wooden door behind them before walking towards where their bedroom was.
There were many bad things about the way she lived her life back when she was a slayer. Too much danger, for her and for everyone around her, but it was fun, in the end. And besides, if she hadn’t been a slayer, how else would she have met Angel?
Just that was enough for her to think of those times with a smile, and she sat down on the bed once she and Angel reached there, taking off her robe and getting ready to sleep. She lay down, and immediately felt his strong arms around her, holding her close.
No, she thought. She wouldn’t have changed a thing.
