Chin is gracious and welcoming to Callen when Danny introduces them, and Kono busts his balls a little but chases it with a warm smile to let Callen know that it just means she's accepted him as one of theirs.
Steve, though.... First, Steve gave G one of those once over looks, like Danny's his daughter about to go to prom or something. Then, he gives one of those smiles that are actually a thinly covered threat. Callen, to his credit, gave the same smile back.
Then Steve, and why Steve felt the need to start a pissing contest with Danny's very new and not at all established boyfriend, Danny doesn't know, and really, does he understand why Steven does anything??? But Steve, he says to Callen, "Marine intelligence, huh? That was some tough going in Romania."
One of those measuring contests this type has, Danny knew -- my not-quote-by-the-book intel sources are bigger that yours.
Of course G knows how to play too. He answered, "I'd recognize a SEAL anywhere. Funny how the training officers in the area happen to go on vacation right when you go missing."
And then the stare. Steve folds his arms to show that he wants you to know he sizing you up, and G puts a casual hand near his pocket just to show he's exactly dangerous enough to look casually bored right before he nails you. And they stare at each other, neither willing to be first to look away.
Finally, Danny yells, "Are we done here? Can we please go back to the case or perhaps one of you have a completely unnecessary explosion to instigate?"
Callen gives a smirk that makes Danny wonder if he hasn't fucked up and found someone crazier than Steve. But at least Callen's not giving the face that Steve is, that hurt offended look of "What? What possible objection could someone have to an explosion here or there?"
Chin luckily changed the subject to football, then criminal forensics, giving G something to talk about with the team, and Danny mouthed a silent "THANK YOU" to Chin when no one else was looking. When it was finally time to head home and Danny and G were in the car, Danny felt compelled to say, "I'm sorry about Steve. I mean, he's a really good guy, but he's just kind of..."
Callen laughed. "Relax. He's exactly what I expected."
"You expected him to be a domineering control freak who's so overprotective of his grown adult team that he acts like a macho --"
"Relax, Danny. Geez, do you always yell so much in the car that your face turns red?"
"Maybe."
"Anyway, yeah, you told me about him. Navy SEAL, now a cop, overprotective of his friends. Nosy. Tries to tell you how to be in your down time. But a great guy. Believe me, I've worked with the type."
"Wait... Steve is a type? There are people LIKE HIM out there? Ugh, the world is just not a sane place."
Callen just grinned. "I'm really glad I got to meet your friends. And I'm glad I know the people who have your back when I'm not here."
Danny smiled. "Okay. I'm glad you're glad. When do I get to meet the LA team? Or should I be worried about meeting Sam?"
Callen smiled. "Nah. Sam will be happy for me. He's always saying I should get more stability, find someone nice. But..."
"What?"
"We'd better practice a little before you meet Hetty."
