Ezio Auditore da Firenze was asleep in Leonardo's bed.

The artist from Vinci had been surprised and thrilled to hear the man knocking on his workshop door, and even more pleased that Ezio had come to him not out of necessity but desire.

"Ezio, amico, so good to see you," Leonardo had said, before Ezio cut him off with kisses and little sounds of urgent desire. Leonardo had chuckled against Ezio's eager mouth and spirited him to the small bedroom he kept above the workshop.

Ezio had wanted him so badly he had tried to just shuck his breeches down to his knees and be content to take and be taken thus. With a chuckle at the younger man's impatience, Leonardo had stopped his enthusiastic rutting, firstly by removing each of his weapons, and the belts for each; followed quickly by his armour. First the vambraces with their hidden Codex-designed weapons, then his pauldrons and heavy chest plate.

After the body-armour, Leonardo lifted off Ezio's Assassin robes, taking the time to stroke the sensitive skin of Ezio's chest, and then removed his camicia - which was so stained with blood Leonardo shuddered and simply threw it from the room, silently reminding himself not to let Ezio leave without borrowing one of his own. It took Leonardo somewhat longer to remove Ezio's greaves, mostly because the Assassin's impatience impeded his progress.

Finally, finally Ezio was nude, making Leonardo think that he really ought to paint the man, before he became so heavily scarred that he would feel unable to show his body to the world.

"You could be David," Leonardo murmured softly.

"WHO?!" Ezio sputtered in shock, misunderstanding the comment.

"From the Bible, the one who felled a giant with a slingshot; you could pose for me," Leonardo said, kissing down Ezio's shoulders and chest. Ezio gasped when Leonardo's thumbs found his nipples.

"Would I ha-have to do much?" he asked.

"Just be still while I sketch you," Leonardo replied absentmindedly, turning Ezio around, to trail kisses across the planes of his back, and down the ridge of his spine.

"Oh... Alright... But not just now, si? I want to make love now," Ezio said plaintively.

Leonardo laughed outright at this.

"Ah, but anticipation makes it even better, amor," he said, teasing.

"Not for me," Ezio growled, tackling the laughing artist to the bed, and burying his nose in Leonardo's gilded hair.

Ezio was asleep in Leonardo's bed.

After hours of loving, and feeling thoroughly and enjoyably exhausted, Leonardo watched the rise and fall of Ezio's chest as the Assassin slept. Leonardo's hands itched to create art.

He lay curled against Ezio, softly stroking his skin, pausing at the roughness of callouses or scabs, the smoothness of burns, the pucker of arrow-wounds now closed, and the lines of sword slashes and similar wounds. The only scar Leonardo left untouched crossed his lover's lips.

"Any one of these might have taken you from me," he whispered sadly into the unhearing Ezio's ear. "I could not bear it if you were so careless as to let them take you away."

Some days later, Innocento, Leonardo's youngest apprentice, was tidying up and seeking scraps of paper in the Maestro's bedroom, and came across a study in charcoal of skin and muscles. But this one was crisscrossed with lines that Innocento did not recognise from other studies of the musculature.

In Leonardo's spidery mirror-writing, the title: Scar Tissue, A Study.
