Next time Cas appears when Dean just dropped Ben at school. It’s just him and his baby and his music and just for a minute it doesn’t suck so much. Then of course ruffled archangel of the Lord is riding the shotgun.
- Raphael has her soul.
- Fuck.
- Yes, - agrees Castiel.
- But you are all juiced up now.
- That’s why I’m still alive.
And that’s something to think about.
They drive in silence.
- What’s going up there, Cas?
Castiel looks away.
- Civil war, - and before Dean has any chance to say how incredibly shitty it is, Cas adds: – If Raphael wins, Apocalypse will start again.
They go in a ditch.

Summer is almost over when Dean realizes that Lisa might be never coming back, just like Sam. Doesn’t stop Dean from thinking about both of them, and it hurts like hell, but he has semi-normal life now, he has Ben and someone needs to take care of that kid. So he carries on. Cas flies by regularly. Usually he doesn’t have anything good to say, but Dean still glad he is here, because there is no way Dean would be able to do it all alone. Also Dean suspects that the other way around might be just as true.

One Sunday afternoon, when Dean is raking leaves Ben calls him from inside the house.
- Cas is home.
- A minute! – He calls back, ignoring a strange feeling gnawing at his inside. He recognizes it as a worry when he steps into the kitchen. When Ben offers him a cup of burnt coffee, he recognizes annoying feeling as a worry about family.
Well, shit.

Dean wakes up because Cas is watching him and instead of calling him on that, Dean tags him by his stupid perpetually askew tie until they noses bumps.
- Dean?
- I’m going to kiss you now.
- I’m going to kiss you back, then.
- Works for me.
They have heat-up pizza for breakfast that morning.

Lives goes on, war goes on. Lisa is still gone, but Cas is right there and Ben is a wonderful boy. And if any of stuff that is going on in Dean’s life was actually normal it could pass for that apple pie life he promised to Sam. But it’s not, what with Dean effectively being army wife of freaking archangel. Also Ben is not really his. And if Liza will ever come back, Dean will have to choose between Cas and Ben and he is not sure he can make that choice. One night he tells Castiel that much.
- Why would you have to choose between your son and me? – asks Castiel, perplexed.
- You will bring Liza back, will you?
- I promised I will.
- And when you do, she wouldn’t want us around: hunter with PTSD and his too friendly neighborhood angel. Picture of healthy family.
- But you are his father.
- Not by blood.
Cas gives his a really strange stare. A really telling stare.
- Son of a bitch! – swears Dean and kisses the life out of his angel.
Problem still remains. Cas just doesn’t see it.
