Date: 2012-04-21 07:45 pm (UTC)Sam remembers hell. In disjointed glimpses and bright flashes of pain, yes, but he remembers. And every part of him, all his sanity and sense, tells him that it's the worst experience of his life.
Except it isn't. Because every time he tries to tell himself that, he remembers something else. He remembers the longing. The utter agony of longing. For the power, and the freedom the blood gave him. The way it made him feel. For the way it made him think that he could protect people, that he could protect Dean.
It makes him remember the way Dean took it away from him. It makes him remember Dean's horrified, terrified face, through the window of the panic room. All the sense, the raggedy ends of his sanity can't make that image okay.
So looking at it now, looking at Dean now, though that very same window, with that very same longing running through him, that feeling of power slowly draining away, with the world gone to shit, and memories of hell trying to force their way into his mind ...
It makes him feel sick, that he slipped. That he fell back on the path that nearly destroyed him the first time.
Because he can deal with hell. Given time, he can deal with it. He can't deal with the way Dean looks at him. He can't deal with Dean being disappointed in him.
Sam's nightmares aren't of hell. He has nightmare of becoming the monster that Dean will someday have to kill, and the panic room ... that hold every memory, every fear ... the panic room is worse than hell.
