Aside from chasing criminals he also went to the pub three times a week and had a pint or two with a detective inspector called Lestrade, who was actually giving them the cases. John had felt bad at first for the silver haired policeman, who had to deal with the eccentric Holmes, but pity had quickly turned into friendship. He could do regular things with Greg that Sherlock found absolutely pointless like watching soccer and get sloshed once in a while.
