Short fic is short. Hope this is alright ...

Callus

The bow slids back into her hands, and she holds it awkwardly for a few seconds, confused at how uncomfortable, how heavy it feels. And then she remembers, then she actually looks at her hands ...

Her hands. Her warriors hands, with their hard won calluses, and their long healed scars, that held the bow with ease, confidence, that won so many battles ... Those aren't her hands anymore.

These hands are smooth. The hands of a young woman, a woman who will marry, stay in the kitchen, be a good wife, a better mother. These hands do not speak of blood, or battle, or glory. These hands would never, should never hold a weapon or grip the arms of a throne.

She pauses, looking down at the shaft of the bow, and then tightens her grip. The hard wood sits in her hand, the calluses and groves long since gone, or never there, will soon form again. The thought makes her happy.

The bow feels good in her hands, and suddenly she feels at home.

I hope this fits with the rules of dreams in Inception... been a while, and I'm a little iffy on some of the details. Feel free to correct me :)



Of course, she's in a dream. Maybe created, but most likely not. She's made worlds sort of like this one before, but she's also dreamt them, long before she learned what she was capable of. The hallways twist and turn haphazardly and the rooms appear to be utterly random but at the same time make a strange sort of sense. When she finally decides to double back, she's not entirely sure whether she'll be able to find her way. She keeps walking, though, past rooms both familiar and unfamiliar (another point for this being a dream) until she makes it back to the entry room.

There's a man standing there, and in the way of dreams she feels she knows him, though she's never met him before in her life.

"How did you get in here?" he asks, not quite angry, but a bit wary. "No one gets inside without a key. Well, I say no one... most people don't get inside without a key. Do you have a key?"

"It's bigger on the inside," she blurts out, the first thing that comes to mind. Doesn't matter anyway.

He nods, and leans back against the center console. "She is a bit, yeah. Answer the question."

"Door was open," she says. "Now you. What is this place?"

He frowns at the door, then gives her a considering look. "I suppose, since I'm sort of in between things at the moment anyway, I could be persuaded to show you."

She almost says yes, no thought required. She's definitely in a dream. Of course, she is. What else could it be? But still, something's nagging at her. She sighs, and, feeling a little foolish, reaches into her pocket and wraps her hand around the totem she always carries now, just to be extra sure.

"Oh," she says, through a sudden adrenaline rush. She spins to look back at the labyrinth of hallways she just emerged from, and back to stare at him.

"Of course, I understand if this is all too big for you," he says, turning away from her toward the console.

Part of her wants to run out the door and never look back. The rest is far too excited about how familiar—how real—the weight of the chess piece is in her hand.

"Okay," she says, far more confident than she feels. "Show me."

He turns to her with a grin. "Hold on tight."

I've never done fandoms for movies (the canon is too small for my tastes), but I'd definitely read a fic about Jamie and Ste. Seeing your prompt makes me want to break out my VCR and watch the movie again.

Beautiful Thing is one of the few films I owned on video that I just had to replace with the DVD.

I only have a few film fandoms. TV shows definitely give you more canon to work with.
