It was a blue box, not very big, but it filled the engine room with a presence that left Kaylee almost breathless. There was a lit sign over its door and she could understand every word of it; which was kinda funny, coz she only knew about three words of Ancient English. Not that it mattered, the words were a lie anyways.
“Police Box,” the sign said.
But Kaylee knew a ship when she saw one.
Tentatively, she reached out and touched it, felt the grain of the wood under her fingertips, so different to the grease and metal that usually passed beneath her hands, but that didn’t matter because there it was, humming its own song.
Alive, it said. I’m alive.
“Oh, you beauty,” she said, her voice breaking. Her head told her she should tell the Captain, he’ll be real mad if she didn’t, but her heart had other ideas. She pushed at the door, willing it to open, but it didn’t budge.
“Fong luh,” she berated herself. “Of course it won’t open. Not your ship.”
But she guessed the ship changed its mind because the door opened, bathing Kaylee in a warm glow of light. She let out a startled laugh and then patted the doorframe. “Why thank you, kind ship. Don’t mind if I do!”
She stepped inside and her world changed around her.
The door closed.
