This was Simon's first thought when he heard of their engagement. But he swallowed his questions and smiled and offered to help with the planning.
He thought briefly about injecting Sam with a sedative, tying him up in the infirmary, and interrogating him. If River were about to be burned at the stake, would you hold on or would you let go? If River's mind broke, what would you do to give her a chance to heal? Can you really love and understand both River-the-warrior and River-the-child? River the wise woman who can look the most vicious reality in the eye without flinching, and River the girl who needs to be held after a nightmare? Can you ever love River like I do?
But Simon managed to push these thoughts aside, at least for the time being. After all, River deserved her happiness. And Sam seemed... all right, Simon supposed. Kind of tall, but otherwise ... all right. And besides, if Simon interfered too much, there was always the chance that River might kick his ass.
So Simon would do his best to act happy that he was about have a brother-in-law. For now, anyway.

Some part of him just wanted to tie Sammy up and beat some sense into him. Wanted to ask "What do you really know about this girl Sammy? Don't you think she looks a little bit FREAKY when she smiles after a massacre? And would she sell her soul for you Sammy? Would she go to hell for you Sammy? Would she ignore it when the person she looked up most said to kill you if you ever went evil? Would she let the WORLD go to hell rather than killing you Sammy?"
But Dean managed to push these thoughts aside, at least for the time being. After all, Sammy deserved his happiness. And River seemed like she could handle the crap that would inevitably fly their way. And she did have a rockin body. And besides, if Dean interfered too much, there was always the chance that River might kick his ass.
So Dean would do his best to act happy that he was about have a sister-in-law. For now, anyway.
