Turning on the computer, Robbie when to look to see what the daily internet had to say. He liked his computer, social media, games, even going to skyping like sites to talk to others around the world.
He typed in his name, searching what news was out there associated to his name. It made him smile when it was pictures of him and Gaz. He had sang with him the night before. Helping out in one of Gaz’s causes. The man was on his way to be a Knighted, he knew that.
Looking at their happy faces, seeing the captions to them. It made his heart swell. To have found what they had not so long ago. To be able to say their problems and acknowledge them and move on. And to find what he had been looking for, for so long. Someone who understood him, counseled him, and supported him. All his projects since getting back with Gaz and the guys, were better than if it was just himself.
Looking back again that the picture of them hugging, enjoying it.
Yes, he was happy. Loving that when he went to that dark place in his mind, he could call one person who would send him a lifeline and not … let … go.
Life was good.

Date: 2014-01-10 07:58 pm (UTC)She hesitates to call it 'love' but that is what others would call it. Loyalty, she calls it. Devotion. Respect. It was him, after all, who made the call when she was kneeling on the floor in Chechnya, bleeding out onto his shoes. It was him who could have put a bullet between her eyes and signed the paperwork, and it was him who decided not to, decided instead to crouch down and staunch her wounds. It was him who stitched her up and calmly took the scalpel away when she shakily tried to take it to her wrist.
"I won't talk." She had coughed blood onto him then. "I will give you nothing."
"You don't have to give me anything," he'd said, as the drugs coursed through her, taking the pain away. "Rest now."
He's a good handler, one of the best she's come into contact with. He knows her, knows her limits, knows when to call for backup and, as is far more usual, when to give her the space to do her work alone.
She'd made an advance on him, years ago, after a particularly successful mission. She had known, the moment before she'd crushed their lips together, that he did not feel the same towards her. She had kissed regardless, for just a taste, a hint, of what might have been.
He had let her, and then gently pushed her back, and said nothing.
She had read enough in his eyes. They never discussed it, and she is grateful for that. She does not like to appear weak before anyone, and he has seen her at her most vulnerable countless times. He has never used any of those moments against her.
He is unlike anyone she has ever met.

She knows before Coulson does. She knows before even Clint does, though he catches on quickly. Coulson is the last to realize, and it takes Natasha gently but firmly pushing Clint towards him after a mission for Coulson to fully understand. They go into a back room together, fumbling with each other's clothes.
Natasha takes a shower. It occurs to her, as she's drying off, that she never thought to ask Clint whether he liked men, or even Coulson, in that way.
She finds out the next day, when Clint confesses some things to her. Things she ought to have seen from a mile off, and hadn't. He doesn't feel that way towards Coulson, but he's willing to make the exception, because Coulson is a good handler and keeping him happy is more important than Clint's desires. Natasha tries and fails to explain that Coulson would not feel that way, and gives it up as a lost cause. Clint has … interesting ideas about trust, and safety, and the tradeoff for protection.
Clint puts his hand on her arm, and she freezes, a hundred ways to kill him fluttering through her mind.
He seems aware of the danger, but can't conceal the hope from his features.
Well … why not? It will make Clint happy, it will likely feel good considering Clint's file and experience, and he is going to be keeping Coulson happy, something that Natasha cannot accomplish herself.
She leans into his touch, smiles as he slides to the floor between her legs, and relaxes, hands tangling in his hair. She imagines, instead of the blond locks between her fingers, a dark, receding hairline instead, with touches of gray.

Date: 2014-01-10 09:20 pm (UTC)He had imagined, at that time, that one or both of them would be dead soon. He had thought in terms of months, a year or two perhaps, but not a decade.
He could never have anticipated the Machine gaining sentience, moving itself far out of his reach, controlling others as he once sought to control her.
He recalls Detective Carter with fondness, and guilt. They could not save her. The fact that her crusade against HR has been felt years after her death does not comfort him. She died needlessly, and he will never forget that.
Detective Fusco retired last year. Occasionally he answers their calls for assistance, more often than he ought to, but Harold knows the dangers of idleness and keeps his contact information at hand.
Shaw comes as goes as she pleases, and she pleases to take long trips around the world without a means of being contacted by Harold. Sometimes she is sent somewhere by the Machine. Sometimes she is alone. Sometimes she is accompanied by Root.
Root has transformed as well, though not as dramatically as the Machine. She is still violent, still unstable at times, but there are pills in her medicine cabinet and she takes them regularly. Harold will never truly trust her, but then, he has never truly trusted anyone since Nathan.
No, that is a lie. Harold has trusted someone since Nathan.
Harold stares at John from across the Library - not the old one, from years ago, a new one, the old one was bombed four years ago at it was too painful to rebuild the wreckage. The date blinks at him from a corner of one of his many computer screens, and the weight of ten long years hits him. Were he not already seated he would stagger, collapse into a chair perhaps.
So much has happened. So many people have come and gone, died and lived, moved on or lingered with them. Harold has pulled forty-seven bullets from John personally, and watched him receive urgent medical care six times. It has not gotten easier, if anything, considering how many times John has now saved Harold's life, it has gotten more difficult to see John pale and dazed on a table with his organs exposed. Every time, Harold forgets how to breathe, and every time he feels his heart fighting to break out of his chest.
Early on, perhaps, there might have been a moment where something could have been said. When he was drugged by that woman, perhaps, and he felt the urge to blurt out about how attractive he found John. When John nearly died, cornered by the CIA, and he told Harold how much the work had meant to him. When John saved Harold from Root the first time, took him home, held him as he cried. When Harold found John strapped to that bomb vest on the rooftop and they were seconds from death.
Now … what can possibly be said? What words can bridge ten years, sum up a decade of the kind of relationship they've had?
And Harold can suspect, of course, speculate, but even after all this time he has no idea how John will respond to an overture of something more. Whether he will feel obligated to oblige Harold, regardless of his personal feelings, after all that they have been through together.
And Harold, who has been held at gunpoint, kidnapped, nearly blown up, lost everything … Harold is afraid to find out the truth.
Of course, John would never make a move on his own, never initiate something like this. No, it has to be Harold who takes the first step.
Harold turns full to face John, steels himself, and opens his mouth to speak.
