It seems like I'm attracted to damaged goods, thought Veronica. First Lily, then Duncan, then Logan. Now River.
River giggled as if she could hear Veronica's thoughts.
"You're silly, V."
"Yeah, I am silly. For letting you talk me into this." River had dumped several trunk-fuls of red and pink blossoms all over Veronica's bed. It looked gorgeous but made it slippery and awkward to move around.
But River of course had already changed moods and modes again, jumping to the next topic as she lightly straddled Veronica's waist. "Don't think of it as flowers, Veronica. Think of the pink ones as happiness," she said as she lifted a few and let them float down onto her face, "and think of the red ones as justice."
I wish, thought Veronica, thinking of all the shitty things that she hadn't been able to prevent, and all the people who got away with them.
"Pay attention Veronica," River said with a giggle, "Now, if I were a weapons," and here River smiled mysteriously in a way that Veronica found unsettling, "I would let you borrow me. I would be your weapon of vengeance. I would cut through your enemies like a flaming sword through a gingersnap."
"You're insane, Riv," Veronica said with a smile.
"That's what they tell me."
"You know what, let's clean up these flowers and bake some cookies. All your gingersnap talk has made me hungry."
River responded by laughing and bounding away into the kitchen. Veronica followed, smiling, as if it were just another episode, just another non-lucid moment that River's loved ones needed to overlook. But the conversation stayed with Veronica for a long time, making it harder and harder to refrain from doing some investigating into the lovely girl she enjoyed so much.
