(In this 'verse. Long story short, before Under the Red Hood, Jason Todd met the ex-Winter Soldier and they mutually adopted each other. Warnings for talk of violence/death/torture.)

Jason had already purchased a safehouse to be his base of operations; they move in just after midnight and Jason primes all of his alarms and cameras.

“It’s gonna a battle on three fronts,” he says. “Against the various bosses, the cops, and Batman. And that’s before we even get to the Joker.”

Jimmy shrugs. “There’ve been worse odds.”

Jason laughs. “You really are somethin’ else.”

They rest for two days, going back over every piece of intel Jason has.

Getting to the Joker will actually be the simplest part, if it is planned to the last detail.

“Do you still want to confront Wayne and the Joker together?” Jimmy asks. He thinks that is an inefficient way, but this is Jason’s mission. Whatever he wants is what Jimmy will ensure happens.

Jason sighs, leaning back in the chair. “No,” he finally says. “I just want the bastard dead.”

Jimmy asks, “Do you want to be the one to kill him?”

After a very long silence, Jason says, “As long as he’s dead, I don’t care who pulls the trigger.”

“There are slower ways to die,” Jimmy tells him. “If you like, I can make it last.”

He watches as Jason shoves the chair back, getting up to pace. “I’ve been plannin’ this for so long, Jimmy, so fuckin’ long. I don’t even – he beat me till I was almost dead and then he blew me the fuck up, can you believe that? And I, I was actually dead! And Ra’s dumped me in that goddamned pool and –” He covers his face in his hands, mumbling, “What’s dead should stay dead.”

Jimmy stands and goes to him; Jason turns to face him and Jimmy thinks, You are so young. And Jason is: he must be barely 20, if that. Jimmy doesn’t look much older, but he is. He, too, should have been dead long ago.

“I just want him dead,” Jason says.

Placing a hand on Jason’s shoulder, Jimmy replies, “He will die.”

That night, Jason has numerous nightmares. Jimmy remembers – Steve used to get nightmares after his ma died. Bucky would hold him to ward them off.

“Jason,” he whispers from his spot across the room after Jason wakes for the fourth time. “I might know a way to help you sleep.”

“Is it the good drugs?” Jason mumbles. “Fuck, m’so tired.”

Jimmy silently walks to Jason’s bed and slips under the thin sheet. They are roughly the same size so he cannot wrap around Jason the way Bucky wrapped around Steve, but perhaps touch will be an anchor nonetheless.

“Uh, dude,” Jason says, “what are you doing?”

“Holding you,” Jimmy says.

“Right.” Jason scoffs. “Whatever.” But he moves in a little closer, closing his eyes as his head rests on Jimmy’s shoulder.

Jason has one more nightmare but it does not wake him up.

Jimmy spends the rest of the night planning ways to get into Arkham.

Jason’s original idea involved him taking over the drug trade in Gotham. Their new plan does not. Because the Joker will not be removed from Arkham, Jason and Jimmy do not need to trick any criminals.

Instead, they begin hunting down the heads of the criminal organizations and executing them. It is much easier than eradicating Hydra.

The police had no place in Jason’s original plan.

In the new plan, the corrupt police officers are treated as the symptom of a disease and executed like the criminals they are. And as the police begin to die, a manhunt is started.

And then there is Batman.

"Papa?" Grace says, lights flickering across her fingers, "do I have magic?" She sounds frightened.

Well, of course she is. The only magic she knows is the kind that stole her mother, the kind of the Dark One and the Evil Queen.

The lamp burned out while he was gone, sealing the way. Regina seeks them and until Jefferson is sure they are safe, he locks the path every night. The lamp burned out and Grace fears the dark, so she unknowingly created light.

According to his older brothers, Jefferson's first magic was the same.

"You do, my dear," he says, reigniting the lamp with a thought. "Your mother did, as well, and so do I."

Grace shakes her head, hiding her hands in the folds of her skirt. “But magic’s bad!” she says.

Her mother has been gone for three years.

Jefferson sighs, sinking down in front of Grace and gently wrapping his hands around hers. “Magic is neither good nor bad on its own,” he tells her softly. “The wielder decides which it will be.”

He could lock her magic away; as one of the Dragon Clan, it is his right and duty, though usually only used by the reigning king. But her magic will be her last defense, should he fall.

“We’ll begin practicing every night,” he says, meeting her gaze. “If you understand it, you will not fear it.”

“Yes, Papa,” she says. She glances toward the lamp before looking back at him. “Can you teach me to make light?”

Should they ever return home, she will be known as Princess Ioana of the Dragon Clan, firstborn of Prince Iakov of the Dragon Clan. “Yes, Grace,” he says. “I can teach you to make light.”

Rochelle Poplin is the youngest daughter of a youngest daughter and her only inheritance is the position of a chambermaid in a lesser nobleman’s house. She has a bit of magic that her mother warns her to keep hidden, always, when she is barely three summers old. Her mother’s face is bleeding while her father rants upstairs, and Rochelle’s older brothers are already at their apprenticeships and her older sisters already wed. Rochelle alone remains at home.

She is sent to the nobleman’s house as soon as she is old enough to follow orders and given into the housekeeper’s care.

Yana is firm and strict, and Rochelle quickly falls into line. She holds her tongue and learns.

When she is fifteen summers, she catches the oldest son’s eye. She has thought herself plain all her life but perhaps it is simply that she is available. She tumbles with him, of course, and he gifts her with jewelry that she hides away in the pocket of air she mastered as a child, where all her treasures are kept. It is the only magic she has.

When she is sixteen summers, she misses her monthly bleeding. For a sapphire ring, the town hedgewitch provides her with a charm so that the babe does not grow. The next month, she bleeds three times and cries herself to sleep.

When she is seventeen summers, the oldest son leaves to make his fortune and they have one last tumble. Yana frowns at her when the son blows her a kiss.

When she is nineteen summers, Rochelle hears whirling wind inside the manor. She follows the sound to a portal in the gallery, where the most expensive portraits are kept. There is a man tossing priceless treasures through the portal. She looks from the portal to the man and decides the worst that can happen is he kills her, so she drops the portal into her air pocket.

The man is attractive even when gaping like a fool. “Take me with you,” she orders, “or you won’t be leaving.”

He laughs. “Give me back the portal and you’re welcome to join me,” he says.

She draws the portal out of the pocket and goes through it; the man follows, closing it behind him.

His name is Jefferson. He teaches her tricks of magic that are more than she ever dreamed could be possible. He is a thief and a rogue, and he works for bad people but that doesn’t matter.

He promises, “One day, we’ll go home, you and I,” kissing her throat and jaw and lips.

When Rochelle is twenty-two summers, she misses her monthly bleed again. She tells Jefferson and his smile is more beautiful than any she has yet seen.

Rochelle names their daughter Grace; Jefferson murmurs, “Ioana” trailing one finger along their daughter’s body from the crown of her head to the sole of her feet.

“What is that?” Rochelle asks.

Jefferson smiles and says, “Her birthright. It simply means ‘God is gracious,’ where I’m from.”

“And what’s yours?” she asks, pulling him away from the crib so that Grace can sleep.

“Iakov,” he says. “‘God protects.’”

“And we’ll go there, someday?” She pushes him onto the bed and falls next to him, tucking herself beneath his arm.

“Yes, my love,” he promises, pressing a kiss to her hair. “You’ll be treated like a princess.”

She laughs. “Oh, I don’t care about that. I just want to learn more magic.”

Jefferson chuckles. “That, I can see to.”

"Look What I Found" NCIS, McGee/Abby (Part 1)

Ziva looked suspiciously at Tony as he walked over to McGee’s empty desk. Their fellow agent was currently with Gibbs in the conference room interviewing a missing sailor’s commanding officer, leaving his desk and its contents vulnerable.

Tony must have felt her gaze, because he turned to her and said, “I just need a pencil.”

She scoffed and Tony gave her a mock expression of hurt as if he couldn’t believe she didn’t believe him. Of course she didn’t, and she gave him a look to show just how little she believed him.

Tony reached McGee’s desk, and with a quick glance around the bullpen, he opened the top drawer, quicking turning his attention to its contents. She heard pens and other items rattle around as Tony poked this way and that in his search.

Ziva knew what he was looking for: evidence. Not of any crime, of course, but of McGee’s girlfriend. They all knew he had had one for almost nine months, but somehow he managed up until now to keep her identity a secret, no small task when working side-by-side with someone as nosey as Tony. As tight-lipped as McGee typically was when it came to his personal life, it had been a major achievement in itself when Tony tricked him into admitted he had a new steady girlfriend. But that had been months ago, and it was still as far as Tony had gotten.

Normally she would chastise Tony for violating McGee’s privacy, but she had to admit she was terribly curious herself about this woman who had seemingly brought her friend much happiness. She’d tried herself, using much more subtle measures than Tony, to get some information out of McGee, but she too had come up empty. She even tried asking Abby, since she knew the forensic scientist was the only one McGee ever confided in. But she was as silent as McGee himself on the matter. Abby had a boyfriend herself these days, but she was being rather quiet about that as well. From what Ziva had heard through the office gossip mill--which she of course never took seriously at all--Abby had been seen eating lunch with the same young man a few times over the past several months. Ziva doubted it was serious though, since Abby tended to trade in boyfriends as quickly as other did shoes.

Ziva knew McGee would tell them eventually who his mysterious woman was, but he’d been dating this girl for almost nine months and she wanted to know now. It was time the secret came out, and if Tony found something concrete to help them identify her, well, she was willing to look the other way--figuratively, of course--as Tony rummaged through McGee’s desk.

Tony pulled the drawer out a little further, and the prodding resumed. Suddenly, however, the noise ended and she saw Tony’s eyes widen as he sucked in a shocked breath. Slowly, almost gingerly, Tony pulled out a small black velvet box. Ziva knew instantly what kind of box it was. She stood up, and with her own glance around the bullpen to make sure neither McGee nor Gibbs was on his way back, she walked over to Tony, who seemed frozen in place as he stared at the little box in his hand.

Without a word, she grabbed the box from him and opened it, ignoring the tiny voice in her head telling her quite forcibly to put the it back into McGee’s desk and forget they ever saw it. Instead, however, she opened the box, looking at the exquisitely crafted engagement ring. The band was white gold, with a generously-sized diamond surrounded by what looked to be tiny red rubies. Like Tony, she could only stare at the ring, wondering just who McGee intended it for.

A few moments later, her conscious took back over and she closed the box, seemingly breaking Tony from his own stupor.

“Put it back,” she said quickly.

“But…” he said pitifully, like a child told to clean his room on a sunny day.

“Put it back,” she reiterated.

The thing is that he’s never going to stop loving Batman.

And this isn’t just a spur of the moment decision, this isn’t like in sixth grade – or was it eighth – that he brought home a hamster – or maybe a dog – and promised to love it and squeeze it and hug it and then left it to die slowly over the next few weeks. This is proper, this is true, this is everything.

(And maybe that was Harley’s story in the end, anyway. Who cares, that’s not the point.)

The point is that he’s in it for the long haul. Forever and ever, or at least until Batsy comes to his senses. And that kind of love, that all-consumingly passionate sort of desire, is the only thing that he’s never been tempted to lie about. Not ever, not once, not even with the Bat’s fist in his mouth and growl against his throat.

Because the thing is, the thing is, that Batman’s never going to stop loving him either.
