He gave it an hour, more than enough time for Sam to make her way to wherever it was she needed to go. He stood in front of the house he'd been hoping to share with her, the "sold" sign left behind in his back seat, only his thoughts to keep him company.

He stood and stared at the siding and stone facade. He could see himself walking from the car in the driveway to the front door, arms full of grocery bags, trying to hurry inside so he could get supper ready before Sam got home from the mountain.

But Sam wouldn't be coming home from the mountain to him.

He had told Sam that they could paint the kitchen yellow, like the house of her dreams. He had the image in his mind of the two of them with paint rollers, both of them laughing and covered with splotches of yellow.

But Sam wouldn't be painting and laughing with him anymore.

He had pictured the two of them sitting side by side in lawn chairs in the backyard many years in the future, sharing fond smiles as the light of the setting sun glinted off their greying hair.

But Sam wouldn't be sitting and watching a sunset with him in the future.

He'd seen so many tiny moments, dreamed of so many little things that would have made every minute with Sam so very, very precious.

But Sam was gone and the dreams were fading away as dreams tend to do when one wakes up to a different reality.

Pete had been sure that he and Sam were headed toward a wonderful, fulfilling life together, but he'd been wrong. Oh so sadly wrong.

With one last look at the house that had held all his dreams of a future with Sam, Pete turned and went back to his car, taking a moment to fight back the tears before driving away.
