"...the beast was large, heavily scaled, and I swear to you, Morgana, it shook as we approached!"

A cock of the head and the glint in Arthur's eyes made Merlin hesitate as he passed by the crown prince and his rapt audience. The load of herbs he held were heavy, but Gaius could wait a moment.

This looked rather...interesting.

Gwen sat on the edge of the steps, her chin in her hand, a few stray pieces of hair dangling down her willowy neck, and Morgana stood by the window - Merlin's expressive face could not hide the smile that crossed it.

The King's ward was dressed exquisitely as she always was, and her arms were folded over her stomach as she nodded - politely - at Arthur's energetic words. The sun was just setting over the battlements, and the light caught the darkness of Morgana's curls and turned them to red fire. The type of red that glowed in coals or in the darkest embers of a nearly burnt-down log.

Merlin found himself staring at the young women, but Arthur's voice drew him as it always did, and he leaned against a column as the other man continued waving his hands and exaggerating.

"...twenty meters long! My knights had to hold me back from charging it of course, but it didn't take us long to corner the thing and wham!"

Gwen jumped and gasped in all the appropriate places; Morgana arched a regal eyebrow and pursed her fruit-pink lips. Merlin laughed to himself and shook his head as he turned and continued down the hall, Arthur's strong tone and deep voice echoing as he went.

That was the future king of the realm? The savior of Camelot and its environs?

Arthur was lucky Merlin knew and understood his destiny...and had a great love for the prince as well, despite Arthur's annoying behavior and his propensity for being a right prat.

Merlin could see Arthur's heart, and he knew it to be true and so much more than Uther had ever hoped for or had been himself. Why he chose to make up stories...well, Merlin would have to worm out of Arthur just how the heir to the throne really felt about the women he seemed to be trying to impress.

A shadow fell over Merlin's face as he crossed through the courtyard and made his way toward Gaius and dinner. He shivered and glanced about him, wondering if he'd forgotten something or someone, or if there was a hidden reason for his not being able to understand Arthur's motivations this time.

The eyes of the lady Morgana filled his brain suddenly, and Merlin hurried on, ignoring the sense of worry that accompanied her presence.
