Maybe it’s because he’s a doctor, maybe it’s because he’s a Torchwood agent, or maybe the reason doesn’t matter. Owen knows himself to be a cranky bastard at the best of times, but he still has more humanity than the bunch of gawkers who are just standing around videoing the scene to put up on their youtube accounts, and tweeting their followers. He can’t help wondering if any of them has even bothered calling for an ambulance or the police. Doesn’t matter, because that was the first thing he did when he saw the accident.

The second thing he did was smash a window and drag the injured driver out of the car. It’s leaking petrol all over the place, and one stray spark could turn it into a fireball. Of course, if that happens the gawkers will have a front row seat, for all the good it’ll do them.

The vehicle that caused the crash just kept going; it’s probably too much to hope someone might have taken note of the number plate. Then again, it shouldn’t be too hard to find a speeding car missing a good chunk of the left front wing. The boys in blue can deal with that when they arrive; right now Owen’s priority is stabilising his patient.

He shakes his head. What does it say about society when people treat a horrific accident like some kind of entertainment? The world is going to hell in a handbasket, but he’ll be damned if he helps it get there. Miserable sod he may be, but life still has value to him, and no one is going to die here if he has anything to say about it.

‘Move along, folks,’ he thinks. ‘There’s nothing to see here, just a doctor tending an accident victim. Go get your jollies somewhere else.’

Jace stood, waiting for the door to open. Nerves trying to get the best of him, but he was determined to have his say. The penthouse door swung open, revealing Alec on the other side. He couldn't hide the look of surprise on his face. "Jace, what are you doing here?" He asked, stepping aside to allow Jace to enter and then closed the door.

Jace looked at him and then the empty room. "Is Magnus here?" Alec's brows furrowed at the question. "Yeah, he's on the balcony." With a nod Jace walked past him. "I need to speak to him." He called over his shoulder as he made his way to the balcony. Magnus looked up as the balcony doors swung open. He stood upon seeing Jace.

"This is a surprise." Magnus' eyes swept over Jace, seeing the tense way he stood, no smile on his face. "Magnus, we need to talk, in private." Jace looked at Alec, not wanting to meet his eyes but forced himself to.

"Sure, we can talk in my study." He murmured something to Alec before ushering Jace to the study. Jace threw a look over his shoulder at Alec before following. Alec stood there a look of hurt on his face. Magnus shut the door to the study and offered Jace a seat.

"What's wrong Jace?" Jace paced the room. Hands clenched into fists. He'd never done this before. Promised himself he wouldn't interfere. But he had to make sure that Magnus wouldn't hurt Alec. With a deep breath he turned to face the Mage who could probably burn him to a crisp if he chose to.

"I want to know what feelings you have for Alec." He could feel himself shaking. This might not end well for him. Alec might be pissed at him when he found out. But he was here and the question had been asked. No turning back now.

Magnus' eyes opened wide. He took a step back, caught off guard. He stammered. "Wha, What business is it of your?" Anger building in him at the question and the man who dared to ask it.

"Alec's is my brother. I don't want to see him hurt. You're older than him. You've had other relationships. This is his first."

"Are you actually asking what my intentions are with Alec? He's an adult. And it's none of your business." Anger causing Magnus' voice to raise.

Not one to back down, Jace stepped forward. "It is my business. He's my parabatai. I rely on him in battle. If his head isn't in it because you've hurt him, he or I could get hurt. Or worse. So, again, I'll ask you, what are you feelings for Alec? If this is just a way to pass the time, then end it now. Before it goes any further and he really gets his heart broken."

The anger Magnus had a minute ago was squelched at Jace's words. Sighing he shoved his hands into his pockets. "Yes, I've had several relationships over my many years. I've never hidden that. But, Alec is special. I wouldn't do anything to hurt him. Not intentionally. I do have feelings for him. Not quite love, but the possibility is there. I'm not sure how he feels, but I think we owe it to each other to find out."

"Jace, you had no right to come here and do this." Both men turned to see Alec standing in the room by the door. He'd quietly entered the room when Magnus' voice was raised. His blue eyes flashing anger at Jace. "We do owe it to each other to find out."

"Alec, I'm only here out of concern." A pained look crossed Jace's face. This was supposed to be said without Alec overhearing.

Magnus reached out and clapped a hand on Jace's shoulder. "This is something that Alec and I need to talk about."

Shaking his head in agreement, Jace walked past Alec. Alec caught him by the arm. "At least you care."

Looking down at his arm and then up at Alec he smiled. He turned back to Magnus. "Yeah, well, you break my brother's heart, I'll break your neck." He left the penthouse, not giving Alec or Magnus a chance to respond. But he was sure his point had been understood. Now he'd just have to wait and see if he had to make good on his words.
