He had watched as humanity advanced. Watched them overcome their need for alien technology and reach the stars. He had live hundreds of lives and lost just as many loved ones, but the one thing he had never done was leave the planet. He had to many memories of horrors in the black to seek the darkness out.
His current life was that of a down on his luck country doctor with a beautiful ex-wife and a daughter that he knew wasn’t his but loved anyway. He’d planned to live this life until his daughter died before moving on. He hadn’t planned for the little boy he’d once rescued to come looking for him dressed as a general and bearing a job offer. At first he’d taken the offer as a favor to Pike, but then he met James Tiberius Kirk and fell hard. Hard enough that he was willing to go into space in order to stay with him.
He comes alive when he’s with Jim and when they fly into space he is free for the first time in centuries. It’s like he’s finally lived long enough and traveled far enough to be free of his past.
