Kedd: Random Horse
Jul. 9th, 2019 02:32 amHiya, fellow fanfiction lovers. I'm
foxxygoddess and today's theme is Random Horse. Prompts can be whatever pops into your head at those words. Go wild!
Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the spoiler cut.
If there are possible triggers in your story, please warn for them in the subject line!
Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt
Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ Any, Any, "Was that a hors-" "Don't. Just don't." "But that was definitely a ..." "Trust me, you do not want to know."
+ MARVEL, Any, caught in magic/science gone astray and being turned into a horse for who knows how long.
+ Any, Any, Life being saved by a horse showing up out of nowhere
We use AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2019 collection. See further notes on this new option here.
Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 1 (not very current), Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 2, or the Calendar Archives, or for more recent prompts, you can use LJ's advanced search options to find prompts to request and/or fill.
While the Lonely Prompts Spreadsheets and LJ's advanced search options are available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching for in the future.
(sorry for posting late, my desk became a warzone)

Date: 2019-07-09 06:32 pm (UTC)"Wild horses couldn't drag me away."
Spock watched Kirk's shoulders rise, his spine grow straight. An attempt at intimidation - and although the move made him roll his eyes, Spock noticed the alien tribe leader shrink back in fear.
Spock exhaled, because that tribe leader had been threatening Spock's life before Kirk decided to step in.
"Let's get going," Kirk mumbled, his eyes refusing to break contact as he motioned for the rest of the away team to head toward a safer location.
Once they were a few meters away, Spock slowed his pace until Kirk was at his side.
"That was unnecessary, Captain."
Kirk shrugged. "What do you mean? He was threatening you Spock, I'm not gonna just let that go."
Spock felt a tingling warmth emanating from inside of him, but he ignored it. It was easy to do.
Kirk smiled softly at him, and then spoke into his comm. "Kirk to Enterprise. Beam us up, Scottie."
~
"Doctor McCoy, may I speak with you privately?"
McCoy glanced up from his work, but only for a moment.
"No."
"What does the phrase 'wild horses couldn't' -"
"Wild horses couldn't drag me away? Where'd you hear that?"
Spock hesitated, watching Doctor McCoy shuffle around the sickbay. "The Captain said it."
"Sounds like something an Iowa boy would say. Anyway, it means, uh, nothing can move him. He's determined to stay put, wherever he might be."
Spock looked away from Doctor McCoy, the warm feeling growing again. It was most unusual.
"You okay there?" McCoy asked him, eyebrow furrowed.
"Yes, Doctor."
Spock swept out of the sickbay without another word.
~
"Give us yer ship's captain, stranger, and no harm shall come to ye. We'll let ye go on yer merry way."
Months passed, but the crew of the Enterprise kept finding themselves in increasingly similar situations. Someone was always getting threatened, but someone was always willing to defend them.
This time it was Spock who stood before Kirk, sprawled on the ground behind him with an eye swelling shut and a split lip.
"Spock, just go," Kirk said, his voice strained.
"No, Captain," Spock replied, his voice low and even. The alien bandits snickered at Spock's defiance.
"Spock, that's an order -"
"Sir, undomesticated equines could not remove me."
Nobody moved or spoke for a few beats. Spock took the silent opportunity to grab Kirk's arm, heave him upwards, and take off into the trees.
"You know," Kirk yelled, "you said it wrong!"
"Duly noted, Captain!"
~
"Quite the shiner there, Jim," McCoy's voice echoed as Spock entered the sickbay.
"Well, it would have been a lot worse if Spock hadn't been so intimidating." Kirk grinned, but Spock didn't rise to the bait. Instead, he smiled politely and stayed silent.
"Our hobgoblin, intimidating? Do tell."
"Get this: Sir, undomesticated equines could not remove me." Kirk laughed out loud, but only for a moment, because his face was still on the sore side.
McCoy chuckled and glanced in Spock's direction. "Hey, isn't that what you were asking me about the other -"
"I am needed on the bridge," Spock interrupted, his voice curt and a little panicked. He glanced at Kirk.
"Good to see you are recovering, Captain."
Spock turned and left the sickbay, and he finally understood the strange feeling he'd been having.

Date: 2019-07-09 07:07 pm (UTC)“Freckles won’t respond to threats or pleas or bribes. Just honesty,” Counselor Dan said as Estelle made an attempt with the horse. “Horses respond to how you feel. If you’re calm and confident, Freckles will do the same.”
“Do I have to touch it?” Estelle asked fearfully.
“He won’t hurt you,” Dan assured her. “I know he looks big, but he’s here to help you. Just like me.”
The furthest Estelle could get was timidly touching Freckles on the neck, but you’d have thought she’d won a prize with how her face lit up. Dan gave her a hug.
“That’s great progress! Okay, James. It’s your turn.”
Bucky hunched his shoulders. “I’m good.”
“Equine therapy is an important part of the process here,” Dan reminded him. “You’re here because you want to reconnect with the person you were before, right? This is just another step.”
Bucky sighed, and stepped up. Freckles’ tail swished, but the horse otherwise stood very still.
“Do you need help?” Dan asked.
“No.” He didn’t want help, because it made him vulnerable.
What Bucky really wanted was to be able to get better all on his own, without group therapy and stupid exercises like this, but he also didn’t want to disappoint Steve. It had been Steve who recommended Mountain Breeze Farm in the first place.
He reached down, pinching the horse’s tendon like Dan had showed them, but Freckles continued to just stand there without moving.
“Pick up your stupid foot,” Bucky grumbled.
“You can’t force him,” Dan said. “Are you sure you don’t need help?”
Bucky just glowered. Then Freckles shook his head and whinnied, and Bucky jumped back like he’d touched a live wire.
“You will ride, Soldier.”
It was just a sentence, his mind automatically translating the Russian, and he had no context for the overwhelming fear that came with it. Bucky was pressed up against the side of the barn, chest heaving, and it took a long moment to realize everyone else had gone. Everyone but Dan.
“It’s okay to feel the fear,” Dan said softly. “But you can’t let it define you. What happened to you is in the past, and only you can decide how you want to move forward. We’ll try again tomorrow.”
*o*o*o*
The others complained bitterly about mucking out the horse stalls, but Bucky didn’t mind it. Physical labor was something he could get behind, something he could understand. He didn’t need to talk, he just worked his muscles until he felt the familiar burn. He was still at it when the rest of his group went to lunch, sprinkling hay into the last empty stall.
There was a whinny behind him, and Bucky turned, holding the rake in a defensive position. But it was just Freckles, his big head sticking out over the door of his stall.
“Stupid horse,” Bucky murmured.
Freckles shook his head, mane swinging, and showed his teeth.
“You are so. All you have to do is pick up you damn leg. It’s not hard, see?”
Bucky lifted up one of his legs and immediately felt like an idiot. Why the hell was he talking to horse? Therapy was making him weird.
“You’re the lucky one,” Bucky muttered, turning back to the empty stall. “You get broken, they shoot you. Pain’s all gone.”
“That’s pretty dismal.”
Bucky started, bringing up the rake again, but it was just Evan from his group. He shrugged, like it didn’t matter. Evan leaned against the stall.
“It gets better. Or so they tell me.”
“Platitudes.”
“Maybe. It helps, sometimes. To talk it out. Let it go, instead of keeping it inside like a sickness.”
Bucky knew from group therapy that Evan had lost men in his command because of a stupid mistake he’d made, that the circumstances, while classified, where bad enough that he’d gotten a medical discharge shortly after.
“Talking about it doesn’t make it go away.”
“No. But it saps the strength of it. Sometimes that’s enough.”
Bucky shrugged again, and after a few minutes Evan left the barn.

Date: 2019-07-09 08:20 pm (UTC)Peter hunched his shoulders defensively. “Mr. Stark, I’m still in high school, I’m an Avenger on the side, and the first girl I ever managed to go on a date with ended up being the daughter of a man who was trying to kill me.”
Tony started at him for a long moment. “TMI, kid. I meant obviously Dr. Strange has been messing with portals again.” He turned and hollered over his shoulder. “Stephen! Come fix this mess you made.”
Steve leaned over to Peter, though he never took his eyes off of the majestic creature who was stamping its silver hooves in the grass and chewing delicately on Clint’s lawn. “What does a unicorn mean?”
Peter sighed, though his face was bright red. “Just...Google it.”
