Whew, I took a chance and made a guess. But then, my Target plays some strange stuff sometimes, but I'm not sure they've ever gone that far back. :D

I just switched over to a station that plays the music from the 70's and 80's for a change of pace.

We used to have a grocery store here called Fresh & Easy and they'd go from pop music to Neil Diamond to country and I never could figure it out.

Nice! It's definitely a nice change.

Any, any, A magical pet store is open, but the good pets are too expensive, what magical pets you find in the discount section? (stolen from I Can Has Cheeseburger?/Reddit).

The storefront was so tiny, it could be easily missed - just a grey wooden door with peeling paint to match. The faded letters fly-splattered glass window read 'Mag l Pet'. Genevieve didn't figure the door would open but it did, pushing into the shop with just the faintest squeal and the soft chime of bells. She stepped through the opening and hesitated. The smell tickled her nose, pleasantly, not like stale cat pee or puppy poop. Genevieve let the door close behind her and wandered into the store.

Light drifted in from somewhere, a sweet rosy glow that belied the full noon sun outside. Silhouettes of huge but delicate bird cages hung from the ceiling and Genevieve could just make out something fluttering within, in colors that didn't seem quite natural. Something rustled next to her and Genevieve glanced down, seeing a flurry of paws and speckled fur as it disappeared into a box.

"What kind of place is this?" Genevieve asked.

"A pet store."

She jumped and squealed in surpise.

"Oh sorry, dear." The woman looked about as old as Genevieve's mom. Her hair was loosely piled on her head with wisps framing her face. A copper necklace, intricately carved, had its clasp in the front, a dragon holding onto its own tail with its hands. An opalescent eye blinked and Genevieve jumped again.

The woman ran a fingver over the dragon's neck. "Don't worry dear, he's harmless." The dragon released its hold on itself and rose up to stare at Genevieve.

"Uh." Genevieve remembered to close her mouth. "Uh."

"You said that."

"That's a dragon?"

The woman twinkled. "A bearded dragon, dear." She tickled it under its chin, showing of a few strands of hair.

"Is it...he? for sale?"

"Oh, all the pets are for sale here, dear." The woman gave Genevieve an appraising look. "But he's not exactly for a novice pet owner."

A flush hit Genevieve. She knows, Genevieve thought, but was nice enough to phrase it in a polite way. "What about someone who is a novice?"

"Hmm." The woman studied Genevieve more closely. Genevieve forced herself to not fidget, letting her see the frayed cuffs, the sneakers with holes in the toes. "I might." Beckoning Genevieve with a tilt of her head, the woman led her way through the shop to a neon-lit back room. "There might be something in here that appeals to you."

Genevieve peered into the aquariums. A spider? Ew, no, even if it did glow purple. Was that a slug? That aquarium seemed empty...and that one, and that one - wait. Genevieve stared through the glass. That was definitely a fish tank. And inside was a goldfish that looked like it'd been designed by Tim Burton.

It winked.

"Uh." Genevieve said.

The woman said, "Dear, I'm not sure I have a pet suited for you right now. But I do occasionally get new ones in. In the meantime." Her warm hand landed on Genevieve's shoulder. "I could use a hand. Are you looking for a job?"

A stammer jumbled its way out of her throat. "Me?" she squeaked.

The woman and the dragon wore matching grins. "And it would help you build up some experience in handling the pets."

"Really?"

"I can't pay much," the woman warned. "And you would have to clean a lot of cages." She glanced around the shop. Genevieve followed the woman's gaze, realizing just how large the store was, despite its modest door. "But if you're really interested..."

"I am!" The words burst out of her before Genevieve realized she'd said them.

The dragon's smiled widened. So did the woman's. "Well then, Genevieve Murphy, welcome to Magical Pets."
