Jueves: 100 Words on... Getting crafty!
Oct. 3rd, 2019 12:01 amHello again, friends! I’m
sherlockian_syn and today's theme is all about the arts and crafts. It's time to get DIY. It's time for characters to express themselves. Prompts can be whatever you'd like, as long as it has something do with arts and/or crafts. Drawing, painting, singing, you name it. Heck, your characters could go to a museum or a rock concert. Or it could be the apocalypse, where knowing all the crafty things will absolutely come in handy. Maybe. Just remember that fills should be in increments of 100 words. See you tomorrow!
Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the spoiler cut.
If there are possible triggers in your story, please warn for them in the subject line!
Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt
Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ Sherlock, Sherlock Holmes +/ John Watson, Sherlock learns an obscure craft for a case
+ Stargate Atlantis, Rodney McKay +/ any, somebody finds out that Rodney knows how to make chainmail
+ Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tony Stark (+/ Stephen Strange) + Peter Parker, a night out at the symphony
We use AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2019 collection. See further notes on this new option here.
Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 1 (not very current), Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 2, or the Calendar Archives, or for more recent prompts, you can use LJ's advanced search options to find prompts to request and/or fill.
While the Lonely Prompts Spreadsheets and LJ's advanced search options are available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching for in the future.

Jo squeezed his arm. “Tell me about it.”
“It was nine o’clock on a Saturday, don’t ask me why I remember that. We’d left Abe with a babysitter so we could have a meal out together. We were walking home, and I suggested we go into a bar and have a drink. Abigail said we should dance, which we did, and then walked home. Strange that I should suddenly have remembered that.”

“Head, thorax, and abdomen,” Morgan said, dipping her fingertips into some gold paint.
Peter peeked at her easel. “What about you?”
“Particles of light. This side will demonstrate their particle function, and this side will demonstrate their wave function.” Morgan pointed with her clean hand.
Peter decided not to tell her he was going to use his blue thumb to include a moon on his nighttime snowman scene.

Date: 2019-10-03 11:41 pm (UTC)Rodney was hunched over his desk with a work lamp and a thousand shining silver rings and what looked like leaves made of glittering metal.
He came up short. “Is this a bad time?”
Rodney reached out and snatched the tiny jewelry pliers from him without looking up. Then he looked at Evan and hunched over his work protectively, but to no avail.
Evan had already seen. “Is that...chain mail?”
“Scale maille,” Rodney said, a little peevishly, and straightened up.
“It looks like the stuff the elves wore in the Lord of the Rings.”
“It is.”
“Let me guess - Sheppard’s Halloween costume?”
“We’re going to win this year.” Rodney turned back to his work.
Evan raised his eyebrows. “Who are you going to be?”
“Aragorn, obviously.”
“John has dark hair,” Evan pointed out.
“He has elf ears.”
“Touché.” Evan headed for the door. “Well, happy knitting.”
“Don’t tell John!”
“Roger that.”
Rodney said, “Wait, how did you know it was called knitting rings?”
Evan winked over his shoulder, then sailed out of Rodney’s quarters. He tapped his radio. “Radek, change of plans on our Halloween costumes.”

Date: 2019-10-04 12:35 am (UTC)Feeling warm and oddly domestic, John finished tuning and started strumming. It was an original piece he was working on whenever he had some down time, which wasn’t often. Sometimes bits of it would come to him when he was helping Sherlock on a case or sitting around Scotland Yard drinking coffee waiting for the next great epiphany to happen. He didn’t always remember them, but the ones he did were slotting together nicely.
There were no lyrics, just melodies and chords and progressions, all of it representing the bits and pieces of John’s life. A little bit of a song Sherlock liked to play on the violin. A soaring riff like a jet taking to the sky. A frenetic bit of finger work to represent the quickness of Sherlock piecing together clues no-one else ever even saw. The melancholy feel of a rainy day at home.
Taken separately they weren’t much, but together John thought they sounded pretty good, one section transitioning seamlessly to the next.
“What is that?”
John looked up at Sherlock, who was standing in the doorway wearing a leather apron and black rubber gloves that went all the way to his elbows. He looked like a mad scientist.
“What’s what?” John asked, just to be difficult.
“The song you were just playing. I didn’t recognize it. Something American?”
No-one made ‘American’ sound more like a slur than Sherlock Holmes. John went back and started over, and Sherlock only looked more confused when it came to the violin parts.
“That’s Ravel.”
“You play it sometimes,” John replied. “When you’re thinking through a problem.”
And sometimes Sherlock didn’t play anything at all, just ran the bow over the strings with a far distant look in his eyes. The man could be unfathomable at times, a dark, bottomless lake hiding a myriad of secrets.
“An original piece, then.”
“Yup.” Although what John really wanted to say was that it was a way for John to create a memory of that time and place. A memory of Sherlock.
“I don’t hate it,” Sherlock said, before returning to his experiments.
John kept playing.

Date: 2019-10-04 11:05 am (UTC)“Ah - really?”
Cadman nodded. “She’s got the flowers hanging.”
John stared at the pretty embroidered flowers hanging on Teldy’s door and wondered how they were a sign of her displeasure. Unless it was like Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her dissent collar?
Only something about the twining leaves, orchids, and lilies looked familiar.
John peered closer and saw that the stems and leaves, beneath the flowers, formed the word NO.
“It’s not urgent,” he said, and turned away.
He hadn’t known Teldy did embroidery, only one time he did see her sitting with one of those little hoops, working quickly and efficiently with a needle and colored thread.
She embroidered her own handkerchiefs, he found out one time offworld when she offered one up to a sneezing Rodney.
The border was embroidered with pretty colored chains.
Which were actually cursive words.
Cheer up. Someone loves you. Not me, though.
On another handkerchief, hidden in more flowers and leaves, she had embroidered the words, You make people smile. Because you’re a joke.
Major Lorne, John noticed, had a pretty embroidered sign hanging behind his desk. It looked like a cornucopia. Only in the negative space between the gold and red and brown leaves and gourds were the words Go away.
John figured he’d made a friend when one day Teldy gave him an embroidered sign that looked like swallows in flight but was actually more negative space words: Stop it.
He also kept it behind his desk, and when his Marines were getting particularly on his nerves, he’d point at it, and they would fall silent. Teldy was even more fearsome than her needle. John was glad she was on his side.

Date: 2019-10-04 02:24 pm (UTC)“Hanging out at home,” Reid said. There was a clang in the background..
“Is everything all right?” Derek was actually standing on the street below Spencer’s apartment, a pack of beers in hand.
“Fine!” Reid said, with a suspicious squeak to his voice. “Just fine.”
Derek headed up the stairs and knocked on Reid’s door. “Are you sure?”
“Yeah. I have to go. Someone’s at the door.” Reid hung up on Derek and opened the door. “Morgan? What are you doing here?”
“This last case was rough. Wanted someone to talk to.” Derek held up the beer and food. And then took in Spencer’s appearance.
He was wearing an apron, and his face and hair and chest were dusted with fine white powder.
“Is everything all right? Or is it a science experiment gone wrong?”
“Baking,” Reid said. “I - I’m baking.”
Derek lit up. “Oh yeah? I bet it’s better than what I bought. Need a hand?”
“Actually - yes. Come in.” Reid beckoned Derek inside.
He went and washed his hands, then stood in the doorway of the kitchen and surveyed the chaos. “Where do I start?”
“You’re strong,” Reid said. “Knead this dough.”
As it turned out, baking bread was much better stress relief than getting drunk on cheap beer.
Also, Reid was fantastic at baking.
“Where did you learn how to do this?” Derek asked, hours later, while they were cleaning up the kitchen and waiting for the bread to come out of the oven.
Spencer shrugged. “I’ve been able to cook since I was a child, since my mother couldn’t always be trusted around a hot stove. Baking is - chemistry. But you get to eat the results.”
“Any time you need a hand, you let me know.”
“I will.”

“No,” he said.
“Don’t look at me,” Sooseon protested. “Just because I’m the only female on the team.”
“I can’t either,” Gook said.
“Me neither,” Daegu said.
Eungdo eyed Taeil. “You can sew, right?”
“No.”
“You were a doctor, before. You did a surgery rotation,” Panseok said, catching on.
“Sutures aren’t the same as sewing,” Taeil protested.
“Close enough.” Eungdo clapped him on the shoulder. “You’re going in undercover. Don’t let us down.”
