Hey everybody, we made it to Friday. I’m
sherlockian_syn and today's theme is the lovable, domesticated creatures we refer to as pets. Prompts can be whatever you want, as long as they involve pets in some way. First time pet owner? Crazy cat lady? Exotic creatures? We got 'em all. Just be sure you don't get that one wet. Or feed it after midnight. (Sorry y'all, I'm very tired as I'm writing this, you understand.) Remember that your fills should be in increments of 100 words. I hope you've had a good week here on comment_fic, and I'll see you next time!
Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the spoiler cut.
If there are possible triggers in your story, please warn for them in the subject line!
Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt
Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ Sherlock, Sherlock Holmes +/ John Watson, Sherlock brings home some kind of reptile
+ Stargate Atlantis, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, adopting a kitten
+ Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sam Wilson +/ Bucky Barnes, emotional support animal
We use AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2019 collection. See further notes on this new option here.
Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 1 (not very current), Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 2, or the Calendar Archives, or for more recent prompts, you can use LJ's advanced search options to find prompts to request and/or fill.
While the Lonely Prompts Spreadsheets and LJ's advanced search options are available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching for in the future.

“Steven. That is not a puppy… that is a horse!”
Steve’s expression slid from excited to confused as he considered the huge animal. “No. I mean it’s not a purebred, but I thought Grace would like something from the pound better.”
The girl in question chose that moment to skip into the room, having dropped her bag in her bedroom. Squealing at the sight of the large, black dog, she flung her arms first around Steve and then around the dog. “Thank you, Step-Steve!” she cried.
Danny sighed, knowing the battle was lost. “We need to discuss this,” he attempted, even as Steve was showing Grace how the puppy would already follow simple commands. His daughter squealed with each new trick the puppy demonstrated.
Steve grinned at Danny over his shoulder, clearly proud of his actions and Grace’s reaction to his gift. Danny sighed again. He wasn’t sure why he was fighting it… he’d lost control the minute the crazy SEAL had crashed into his life.

“Couldn’t you have just borrowed a dog?”
“They don’t take dogs, and I didn’t think you’d want a cat around the place.”
“And what excuse are you going to give for bringing the rabbit?”
Jo giggled and Lucas grinned. “She’s about to have babies and they provide birthing facilities.”
“Take her now!”

“I’d been going on for ages about it. Finally, Mum agreed, and we went to look at a suitable litter. They were all sweet and I finally selected one and showed it to Dad. The puppy instantly started to growl, and its ruff went up. I tried a different puppy, but the same thing happened. In the end we decided they knew there was something strange about Dad and gave up the idea.”

Sherlock looked defiantly at her. She glared back. “Now!”

Date: 2019-10-04 08:14 pm (UTC)And, well. It's lonely.
Billy greets him with a plant one day when he visits, potted plant in his hand.
"For your room," he says when he hands it over. "Guess it's pretty quiet at the Riv, nights, huh. Leftover from a job I did on the side."
Billy says it like he's asking, about the nights, but Dan knows he's not. Billy just knew, just like Dan knows, the moment he touches it, that Billy saw a shelf of them at the Hannaford Supermarket on Main Street and picked the best one because Dan's going through a rough spot.
"Thanks," is all Dan says, but he means it.
It's not as good as a dog, he thinks at first, or any cat that isn't Azzie, but it's not bad. He sits it on his window pane, tells it 'Good morning' every morning, finds himself looking for it first thing when he walks in after a shift.
Two weeks in, the weather starts to turn, and he heads over to the nursery down a few blocks and buys it a heat lamp for the winter. Five, he spends thirty minutes calling up the nursery again to find the best soil to use when he repots it. Three months in, the Christmas spirit sucks him in (for the first time since he aged out of the excitement over presents), and he ties a strip of red tinsel around the top of the pot. It's the brightest thing in his bedroom, catches the light when he turns it on every evening.
It's there, day he drives back from Colorado, utterly exhausted, joints aching from the car crash, mind raw from spinning the wheel, feeling whole, at peace, for the first time since he locked Mrs. Massey away.
And for a minute, it's like the growing green leaves welcome him home.

Date: 2019-10-04 12:09 pm (UTC)Fill -- Scrapper
Date: 2019-10-06 12:25 pm (UTC)‘That’ is a small, fuzzy kitten stumbling between the trash cans. Its eyes are blue--Eddie isn’t sure if it’s Siamese or just very young. It squeaks up at them, sniffing curiously at his boots.
“It’s not like I’ve ever been able to stop you,” he answers, resigned by now to the symbiote’s foibles.
Meanwhile, the kitten begins to climb his pants leg, tiny claws inching their way up him. When it reaches his thigh, the sharp tips begin digging into his skin. Eddie plucks the little creature loose, holding it by the nape of its neck.
The kitten bleats at them, paws batting futilely.
Any minute now, Eddie figures he’s about to find out whether cat really is the other other white meat. He’s a little surprised Venom hasn’t scarfed it already.
“It has no chance against us, but it is not afraid to fight us,” Venom says thoughtfully.
Too young to know any better, but Eddie knows from experience what it feels like to take on a fight he doesn’t believe he can win. It’s what they did with Riot. The blue-eyed kitty is swearing at them, he’s pretty sure. It doesn’t like being held like this, it wants a piece of them.
“Come on,” he says to Venom. “If you’re going to eat it, eat it. Don’t play with your food.”
“I don’t think I want to eat it,” the symbiote says, chagrined. “It’s too small.”
“We’ll have to find a home for it, then,” Eddie says, using his other hand to cradle the kitten, which snuggles up against his flannel shirt, still grumbling. “It’s in my lease--no pets.”
Venom pokes the kitten with a tentacle. Not surprisingly, the little beast attacks with teeth and claws. Venom chuckles. “It’s a scrapper,” he approves. “Perhaps some day he’ll be a worthy adversary.”
“Meanwhile,” Eddie mutters, looking around the alley, “We need a box. Something like…aha! Perfect.” One of his neighbors has discarded a medium-sized Amazon box, which affords the kitten plenty of room to move around while still being too tall for it to escape from.
Twenty minutes later, he’s knocking on a familiar door.
“Eddie? What in the world?” Anne stares at him. The box emits a shrill squeak. “What’s that?”
Operating under the old saying that ‘Possession is nine-tenths of the law’, he thrusts the box into her arms. “For you. To keep Mr. Belvedere company.”
“What? No, I can’t--aww!” She’s looked inside the box, and the content charms her instantly.
“His name is Scrapper!” Eddie calls back over his shoulder, figuring it’s best to let her decide it’s a forgone conclusion all by herself. “Nice seeing you!” He slows his pace once they’re around the corner. “We did a good thing there, buddy,” he congratulates Venom. “Anne likes cats. That little guy is set for life. And all because you decided not to eat it.”
“We only eat bad people,” Venom reminds him. “And that little thing was more hair than meat, anyway.”

If Minho didn’t like someone, it was over.
Minho hadn’t liked the last dozen guys Bin had brought home, and half of those guys hadn’t liked dogs either.
Bin hesitated at the front door before he put in the code. Minhyuk stood a respectful distance away, because giving someone your door code was a big deal. “My sister’s dog is really big -”
Minho barking like a maniac made both of them jump.
Minhyuk said, “I like dogs.”
The last six guys had said that.
Bin put in the code and opened the door.
Minho didn’t rush out, because he was too well trained for that, but he didn’t stop barking.
“Minho, it’s fine, he’s a friend,” Bin said desperately.
Sooah, reading a book on the couch, made no move to help.
“Minhyuk, this is Sooah, my sister, and Minho, her guide dog.”
While Minho wasn’t in his harness, he wasn’t working, and there was someone new for him to meet.
And chase off.
Minhyuk knelt and held out his hand so Minho could sniff.
Like that, Minho stopped barking and nuzzled Minhyuk’s hand, demanding pets.
“Hey, boy,” Minhyuk said, scratching him enthusiastically behind the ear.
Minho’s tongue lolled.
Sooah lifted her hand off the page. “Hello, Minhyuk. Welcome to our home.”
“Hello, Sooah,” Minhyuk said. “Thank you. Nice to meet you.” He followed Bin into the house.
Minho trotted after him, happy.
“Traitor,” Sooah called after her dog, but he ignored her.
Bin gave Minhyuk the quick tour - den, kitchen, downstairs bathroom, the little study with the piano and almost enough space to dance, Sooah’s room, then upstairs with the guest room and Bin’s room.
“Your room?” Minhyuk raised his eyebrows.
Bin nodded.
“Does your sister have super good hearing? I know not all blind people do -”
“She does,” Bin said.
“Well, I guess all we can do is this,” Minhyuk said, and leaned in to kiss him.
Bin closed his eyes - and was winded when Minho barged between them, jumping up and licking Minhyuk’s face.
“Maybe it’s not a good thing that he likes you,” Bin muttered.
Minhyuk, laughing, gently shook Minho off and patted his head. “Don’t worry. I like you more.” He kept Minho distracted with head scratches and leaned in again.
Bin kissed him back, and all was right with the world.

It made torturing the souls on Earth so much more invigorating.
It would only get better as Juliet got older.

In response, Balthazar began grooming his leg, not lowering himself to answer me with words.
“If all you’re going to do is mess up my spellwork for the day, you can hie yourself outside,” I informed him.
Standing, he twitched his tail, and followed my command. I turned back to start over again.

"You make yourself vulnerable, open up to some friends about your true nature, and before you know it, someone's left a stray on your doorstep with a note on its collar just because you humans associated kitty-cats with Satanism."
Chloe frowns. "Just drop it off at a shelter, then."
Lucifer pets the cat.
The cat purrs and bats at his cuff link.
Lucifer sighs.
"I didn't say I didn't like it," he says. "I just said it was an insulting cliche. And it is."
