Wednesday: 90s TV Shows
Feb. 12th, 2020 12:13 amHi! I’m
brumeier, and I was so inspired by
cornerofmadness’s 80s theme that we’re going to hit the next decade – the 90s! Today’s theme is 90s TV SHOWS, anything and everything related to TV in the 90s. This could be a fusion, a crossover, or your characters incessantly discussing the OJ Simpson trial.
Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the spoiler cut.
If there are possible triggers in your story, please warn for them in the subject line!
Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt
Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ Stargate Atlantis, Evan Lorne +/ Rodney McKay, Evan is an angelic caseworker and Rodney is his first assignment (Touched By An Angel, 1994)
+ Prodigal Son, Malcolm Bright +/ Any, X-Files AU (1993)
+ Marvel Cinematic Universe, Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes, Sentinel AU (The Sentinel, 1996)
+ Any K-drama, Any, Taxicab Confessions (1995)
We use AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2016 collection. See further notes on this new option here.
Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 1 (not very current), Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 2, or the Calendar Archives, or for more recent prompts, you can use LJ's advanced search options to find prompts to request and/or fill.
While the Lonely Prompts Spreadsheets and LJ's advanced search options are available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching for in the future.

Date: 2020-02-12 12:41 pm (UTC)John listened to the voice on the other side of the door, then turned to his teammates. “It could be a trick. IDC and GDO are pretty much common parlance in Pegasus at this point, but we can’t see their faces.”
“Do their voices sound familiar?” Rodney asked.
John sighed. “Maybe?” A month from now he’d have a definite answer, but the Daedalus had just brought a new wave of personnel, and it always took John a while to learn the new people. If only Lorne were with them.
“What about some kind of test?” Teyla asked. “About Earth culture.”
Ronon nodded his agreement.
John said, “Okay, but first you have to prove you’re from Earth.”
“I’m from Texas,” one of the men said.
He didn’t have an accent, but that didn’t mean anything. Of course, Michael had been told he was from Texas. He’d been told a lot of things about Earth. Who knew what had been spread across the galaxy?
“Finish the line,” John said, and began to recite, best as he could.
Now this is a story all about how
My life got flipped turned upside down
And I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called -
“What’s the name of the town?” John asked.
Rodney stared at him. “What the hell was that?”
“That was rap,” Ronon said proudly. The Marines had been teaching him about music again, it seemed.
“Oh, damn,” one of the men on the other side of the door said. “I know that song. It’s - it’s from this TV show one of my uncles used to watch. An old show.”
“Old?” John demanded.
“Well, you know they’re from Earth,” Rodney murmured.
“Oh yeah!” another airman chimed in. “It had that guy from that one movie about aliens.”
“Men in Black,” John muttered to himself.
“Crap. I can’t remember what the name of the town is, though,” the first airman said.
“Okay, fine,” John said, louder. “Obviously you’re from Earth. Ready to memorize an IDC?”
“Yes, sir!”
A few hours later, John and his team walked through the gate and back into the gate room in Atlantis, exhausted but generally uninjured. Rodney was commenting that he was very hungry and his blood sugar was getting low.
“Colonel,” Weir said, standing at the top of the steps. “Welcome back to Bel-Air.”
“That’s it!” one of the young airmen said. “The King of Bel-Air! That’s what the show was called.”
John resisted the urge to bury his face in his hands. “Permission to clean up before debrief?” he asked Weir.
She nodded, smiling, and John shuffled for his quarters.
On the way, he radioed Lorne. “Major.”
“Sir?”
“We need to institute a cultural education night for our troops.”
“Sir?”
“Starting with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”
“...Yes, sir. I’ll see what I can do.”

Date: 2020-02-12 06:26 pm (UTC)He shut down the webcam, and just in time because he could hear John on the ladder outside his open bedroom window.
“Hi, John,” Rodney said just before John’s cowlicked head appeared.
“Hey.”
Rodney was pretty sure no-one else could crawl through a window as gracefully as John. He was pretty sure John’s bones were partially rubberized.
“Whatcha doin’?” John asked, dropping down on Rodney’s bed hard enough to make the laptop bounce.
“Explaining level thirty-seven,” Rodney said, stowing the laptop safely on the nightstand.
“Wait till level forty-one. That’s a killer.”
Rodney didn’t bother acknowledging that, because he hadn’t gotten that far in the game yet. He was easily the smartest kid in the whole school, but on occasion someone would do something faster or better. Normally that made him mad, but John was his best friend so it was only mildly annoying.
His bedroom door burst open and Jeannie came running in, curly blonde pigtails flying.
“Mer! Can I borrow your microscope?”
“Do I have to explain the concept of knocking to you again?” he snapped. “Get out!”
Jeannie glared at him, hands on her hips. She was the epitome of the annoying little sister.
“I want the microscope!”
“And I want you to bug off.”
“Jerk!”
“Whiny baby!”
Jeannie left without the microscope, grumbling under her breath. Rodney knew he didn’t have to worry about her tattling on him to their parents, for the same reason that John chose to visit via the window instead of the front door – the elder McKays were jerks and getting them involved in anything made it worse for everyone.
“You should let her use your microscope,” John said. He was reclined against the headboard, flipping through one of Rodney’s Batman comics. “Unless you’re afraid she’s getting smarter than you.”
“No-one’s smarter than me.”
John smirked. “Oh, really? Then you know all about the person who has a crush on you?”
That caught Rodney up short. Someone had a crush on him? That was certainly news.
“Someone in our grade?”
“Yup.”
Rodney took a lot of advanced placement classes, but he did share one or two with other kids in his grade. Who could it be? Pretty Samantha, class president and captain of the debate club? Pretty Jennifer, who was on the cheer squad?
Then again, John had said ‘person’, not ‘girl’, so maybe it was a guy? Maybe the hippie kid with the pretty blue eyes.
“If you were as smart as you always say, you’d know,” John said smugly. He tossed aside the comic and picked up a different one. “So much for the big brain.”
Rodney glared at him. “I’ll have you know –”
Oh. Wait. Hippie kid wasn’t the only ridiculously good-looking guy in Rodney’s grade. He looked more closely at John, who was still smirking but was also focused in way too hard on the comic book for someone who didn’t like Batman. And his ears were turning pink.
Did John have a crush on him? Was that why he was always climbing in Rodney’s window and playing video games with him when he could’ve been hanging out with the cool kids at school? Suddenly their whole friendship made a lot more sense, and at the same time was completely unbelievable. Smart, handsome jock John had a crush on science nerd Rodney. It was like something from a gay romance novel.
“Know what?” John asked, sounding nervous.
Rodney leaned in. “I’ll have you know that I know exactly who has a crush on me. And you can either explain to me how that can possibly be true, or…”
John finally looked at him, and Rodney waggled his eyebrows.
“Or?”
“Or you could just kiss me and save the –”
John kissed him, darting in fast and pulling back just as fast. His whole face was flushed. “Okay.”
“Okay?”
Another kiss, this one longer and with just a hint of tongue, and Rodney could hardly believe his luck. His best friend wanted to be more-than-friends. John was smarter than Rodney thought.
And in the end, no explanations were needed.

Date: 2020-02-12 11:54 pm (UTC)“Yeah.”
“The bounty was for a man, not a dog.”
“I know.”
Danny sighed and rubbed a hand over his face. “What happened?”
“Guy gave me the slip.”
Steve was sprawled on the lounger, big yellow mutt practically sitting in his lap. It wasn’t that Danny was opposed to dogs, generally speaking. The ISSP had utilized the animals from time to time, for intimidation of suspects as well as sniffing out illegals. But a dog had no place on the Exit46.
“We’re not keeping the dog,” he said definitively.
Steve looked up at him. “Margolin will be looking for Eddie. We make sure they find each other, we nab Margolin, we get paid.”
That was actually a solid plan, but Danny wasn’t ready to dole out any praise. “Eddie? You named him Eddie?”
“He looks like an Eddie.” Steve scratched the dog behind his ears.
“Steven, let me remind you that the bounty on Margolin is substantial, and we have a lot of repairs to make to keep this ship flying.”
“I’m aware.”
Danny threw his hands up. “He’s aware! That’s reassuring. I’m entirely reassured. The money is as good as gotten.”
When Steve got in a mood he was impossible to deal with. And Steve was a moody bitch a good chunk of the time. He brooded. He sulked. He got lost in his head a lot. Danny understood, he really did. He knew some of Steve’s past history, the losses he’d suffered, but sometimes he wished Steve was present more in the here and now.
“I’ll go find a tracker we can put on the dog.”
“Eddie,” Steve reminded him.
“The next time we go through a gateway, I’m spacing you.”
“Love you too!” Steve called after Danny as he stalked off.
Danny eyed the damage to the underside of Steve’s Asteroid racer. The man himself had managed to escape his encounter with Margolin mostly unscathed.
“You know this is going to cost a lot of Woolongs to fix.”
“It’s covered,” Steve assured him.
“How? How could it possibly be covered? Not only did you not turn Margolin in for the bounty, because you had to play hero to a mangy mutt, but he inadvertently turned himself in to the cops.”
“I know a guy. We’re getting partial on the bounty.”
Partial was better than zero, Danny supposed. What he really didn’t understand was why Eddie was still with them.
“And the dog?”
“He’ll be useful.”
“Useful. Useful doing what?”
Steve shrugged. “He’s a data dog, Danno. Probably smarter than both of us. That’s got to be good for something.”
Danny refused to be swayed by the use of that stupid nickname. “You thinking we could sell him?”
Eddie growled, and Steve put a protective hand on the dog’s furry head.
“He can help us with the bounties. He’ll earn his keep.”
“He’d better.”
Steve reached out and grabbed a handful of Danny’s shirt, yanking him close so he was pressed against Steve’s chest. “And now I’ll earn mine.”
“You don’t need to make it sound so sordid,” Danny complained, and then they were kissing.
Steve had some excellent skills when it came to hunting bounties, but he really excelled in the carnal arts. That, Danny assured himself, was the only reason he kept Steve around. No need to bring feelings into it.
Eddie gave a very human-sounding chuff of annoyance and Danny could hear his nails clicking on the floor of the hangar as he walked away. He really was a smart dog.
“How long do we have?” Steve murmured in Danny’s ear, one hand snaking down the back of Danny’s pants.
“Long enough. I want to hit up Spiders From Mars before we leave, see if I can’t win some extra Woolongs with the partial you got.”
Gambling wasn’t the most reliable way to make bank, but Danny had his own skill set. He figured he could win enough to at least get them through a gateway and after the next bounty.
“Good.” The sheer amount of heat in Steve’s voice lit an answering fire in Danny’s belly.
Not a bad day, overall.
Some people call me the space cowboy
Some call me the gangster of love
(Happy Birthday, Nagi! I watched exactly one ep of this show - guess which one - but hopefully I got the general Cowboy Bebop idea.)
