"Never thought I'd be in a position to check the truth of that," Philip said. "I mean, this cave looks a lot smaller on the outside. It's kind of narrow, too. Do you ever even go outside? How'd you get here in the first place?"
He could swear the dragon's mouth turned up, just a little bit, at the corner. Like a grin. Was the dragon amused? He didn't know much about dragons, not really. He'd heard they were huge and fearsome looking, that they liked to hoard gold, and that they breathed fire - all three things clearly evident in this room. In fact, it was hard to keep his eyes from straying to the enormous pile of treasure the dragon was curled around.
"You know," he said, mouth running before his brain, "just one of those gold coins could feed my entire family for a whole year probably."
The dragon puffed a little smoke out of its nostrils.
"Would it be all right if I take just one?"
He stared into enormous, unblinking eyes, and stepped forward, not taking his eyes off the beast. The dragon didn't move, didn't breathe more smoke. Didn't roast him.
He slowly reached out one hand, still watching the dragon, and placed it over one of the gold coins. As soon as he did, the dragon moved, and Philip fell back with a cry of alarm. He shut his eyes, and covered his face, for all the good that would do. When he realized he was still alive, he opened his eyes to find that the dragon had merely turned its giant head away, looking deeper into the cave.
When his heart had finally stopped pounding, and he felt like he could breathe again, Philip slowly eased forward and grabbed one of the coins. This time, the dragon didn't react.
"Thank you," he said, hand shaking as he placed it in his satchel.
The dragon snorted, smoke drifting up to the ceiling far above. Philip turned away, took a deep breath, and walked out of the cave, valiantly resisting the urge to check behind him every few steps.
It was still storming when he got back to camp.
