Date: 2020-07-12 05:20 am (UTC)Steve’s been out all night--that’s not like him. Bucky keeps trying his phone, but no go. His roommate maintains radio silence.
Ever since he moved in with Bucky after Natasha broke off their engagement and threw him out, Bucky’s been trying to put his pal back together again. Now, she’s seeing a doctor (a nice guy, actually) and Steve’s been moping around being all emo instead of getting back to work and writing something. He’s loopy when he doesn’t write.
Bucky’s folding laundry in the bedroom with his ‘Get ‘R Done’ playlist going, when he thinks he hears a noise in the kitchen. Over the funky rhythm of ‘Brickyard Blues’, something thumps on the floor.
Stepping into the main room, he sees Steve crouched over the trash pail. Is he eating something out of it?! “What the hell, Steve>”
Steve straightens up. Slowly, he turns and stares at Bucky outlined in the doorway. Then he whips around and spews into the kitchen sink. No wonder--there’s nothing edible in the trash can--Bucky just got through clearing out the fridge less than an hour ago, and it’s all Salmonella City.
I’m hungry. That’s Steve’s face, but not his voice. It’s much deeper. Then, Steve licks his lips with a nightmarishly long tongue and says again, I’m so hungry....
Bucky ducks back into the bedroom, grabs his phone and dials the only doctor he knows. “Bruce? Hey, I need you to come right over. There’s something bad wrong with Steve.”

Darcy is affronted. “Little old English ladies talking about soggy bottoms on pastry? Since when?!”
“Well, it is. You don’t just walk in the tent and bake. Listen to them, they’ve all been practicing their signature dishes for a week. They come in with molds and display stands and whatever--it’s not like that stuff grows on trees, not everybody has access to that kind of stuff.”
“But...elitist?” She’s determined to get an answer.
“Think about it: being able to practice means they’ve all got a kitchen to cook in--not everybody does. Not everybody has one of those fancy stand mixers they’ve all got.” He waves her bewildered protest away. “And they can afford to practice--they’re not food insecure. Think about how much all those ingredients must cost,” he points out. “Definitely not something everyone can afford. And they’re good enough that they’ve been able to afford it for years.”
“Good grief, three weeks working at Food and you’re radicalized,” she teases him. “But you’ve got a good point. I never thought of it the contestants that way. That’s some serious privilege.”
“A lot of those bakes look pretty cool,” Bucky admits. “I’d love to try some of those pies! So far, they only thing I’ve gotten to bake at work is cookies. They do a mega-batch once a week and give them out with lunch. They’re not exactly patisserie.”
Darcy raises an eyebrow at him. “I just like to watch it because it’s soothing,” she divulges with a grin. “I feel good if I can slap together a mix and have it come out right. Of course, now, I’m going to be imagining how much everything costs.”
“I want to learn how to cook like that.” Bucky indicates the frozen screen on the TV. “Come up with two different yeast breads for the Sunday buffet, or some of those dressed-up cakes….” He looks dreamily into some middle distance. “Maybe learn how to do fancy frosting with a palette knife and a piping bag…or some of those pies with the lattice and designs.”
“Nice,” she says dryly, “but you might want to master a few entrees, too.”

Date: 2020-07-13 12:07 am (UTC)Somebody on TGBBS was saying they baked the challenges of the previous season, which made me *think* about it. I mean, even a cheap pound of butter runs $3. Then there's all that cream, eggs, flour, etc. and I realized that would run into some serious money, especially for something you might screw up a few times getting it right. And since Bucky is working in a glorified soup kitchen, he's aware that the's beyond the means of a lot of people.
