Tuesday: Costumes
Oct. 25th, 2021 09:31 pmHello everyone! It's
templefugate, and I'm back with more prompts. Today we're focusing on costumes, from the tacky and cute to the deceptively realistic. Whatever your character's motives for putting on a mask, it's time to get dressed up!
Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the above mentioned spoiler cut.
Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt
Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ MCU, Natasha Romanoff, being someone else
+ The Baby-Sitter's Club, Claudia Kishi, struggling to choose a Halloween costume
+ Any, any, dressing up as a parrot
We are now using AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2021 collection. See further notes on this new option here.
Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out the just created Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet. For more recent prompts to write, you can also use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community.
While the Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet and LJ's advanced search options are available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching for in the future.

Date: 2021-10-26 04:55 pm (UTC)There might be a giant volcano in the middle of the living room, plastic dinosaurs and My Little Ponies running from the flow of baking soda powered lava. Sometimes there were puppet shows, or Cara would be teaching a classroom comprised of stuffed animals and her dad. Once, the entire living room had been transformed into an elaborate blanket fort that boasted a mini fridge for snacks, a movie room, and a plushie museum.
This time he was greeted at the door by a diminutive witch in a cheap, molded plastic mask and a plastic cape printed with stars and black cats.
“Aren’t you a few months early for Halloween?” John asked, amused.
“Daddy and I found it at the cheap store,” Cara replied.
That meant they’d been at the thrift shop again. Cara McKay had an abundance of costumes and dress-up clothes, some of which were specially made and others which were bought second-hand and altered to fit.
Cheap plastic seemed out of the ordinary.
“Oh, hey,” Rodney said absently when John joined him at the kitchen table. He had simulations running on his laptop and his eyes never left the monitor.
“It’s nice to see you, too.” John leaned over and pressed a kiss to the side of Rodney’s head.
“What? Oh.” Rodney gave John a proper kiss. “I didn’t realize it was so late. Cara! Are you ready to go?”
“No!” Cara shouted back from elsewhere in the house.
“What’s with the costume?” John asked. “You finally break the wardrobe budget?”
“You mean the witch?” Rodney shrugged. “I was telling Cara about the store-bought costumes we had to wear as kids. Glorified trash bags. When she saw it at the thrift store she had to have it, and it was only a dollar, so I couldn’t think of a good enough reason not to get it, and here we are.”
“Those were pretty bad,” John agreed.
Of course, he’d never had to wear anything that cheaply constructed. The Sheppards hired someone to make them Halloween costumes every year. Honestly, he’d have preferred the less pretentious trash bag costumes.
“I’m ready!”
Cara danced into the kitchen wearing a long black dress, green and black striped socks, a pointy black hat, and the plastic cape.
“Well, that’s better than the other one,” Rodney said, giving her outfit a once-over. “Is it appropriate for the farmer’s market?”
“Witches aren’t just at Halloween,” Cara replied. “Right, John?”
“I don’t know any personally.”
“Now you do!” Cara tugged him out of his chair. “Come on, Daddy.”
John let himself be pulled to the door. “How’s your cackle? Every witch needs a good cackle.”
While he helped her get her shoes on, Cara practiced a witchy-sounding cackle.
“I’m not buying any poisoned apples,” Rodney said sternly.
Cara giggled. “I’m a good witch, Daddy!”
“I’m not buying any candied apples, either. That’s a dental nightmare waiting to happen.”
Cara held each of their hands as they walked out to the car. John had a feeling he was really going to enjoy the farmer’s market.

Natasha nudged her side. She turned, looking forward. Alexei shot her a grin that she quickly returned.
After all, what was so gloomy about Christmas?
