Date: 2021-11-06 02:50 pm (UTC)Her pointy ears twitch. It's in her Fae blood to dart away from him now, to have fled him years ago. But she cannot. She loves him, and no matter what he may otherwise think, he needs her. "Brian -- " Her voice breaks. Her bottom lip trembles. Outside, the rain pours like God's tears. The Maker has seen all he does, all he has done, and she can not help but to think none of the spirits are pleased with her beloved.
"Meggan, please don't leave me." Her nose wrinkles against the stench of liquor; she cannot help it. Nor can she help the instincts screaming through her to pull away from him, to pull away from his currently gentle touch and all the danger she knows too well he also silently represents. "I can't do this without you."
His hiccup doesn't help matters, but he presses on nonetheless as lightning cuts jagged, cruel fingers across the sky. Between his touch and the roar of thunder, she does flinch. She can't help it. But she also cannot help the pain that hits her heart as she witnesses the guilt and hurt in his eyes. He does love her, as much as he's able to love anyone. He's just never been loved and doesn't know how to love. She's never been loved either, but she knows that love is not meant to be pain, something she's suffered far too many times both in this world and at her own betrothed's hands.
"Please don't leave me," he repeats again, his soft, low voice almost a whimper. She closes her eyes as her heart and mind war. She knows staying here with him is not safe, but neither is the world. He also sounds like a wounded animal, and she knows his wounds are far, far deeper than flesh. She's supposed to be able to heal. She's supposed to be able to save. If she leaves him, she knows he will never mend. Leaving may keep her safe, but it will also cut her far deeper than any physical injury could for, despite everything, she still loves this man. She knows she always will; she cannot imagine a life without him, or any world without him in which she may actually want to stay, no matter how much safer she may be away from him.

Date: 2021-11-06 02:50 pm (UTC)"I-I know I can be an asshole, but... You always see the good in me." He caresses her cheek, and she can feel his eyes pleading with her to open her own eyes again and face him. "I-I don't know if I can be good without you. I don't know," he speaks honestly, "if I can be the man you deserve. But I do love you, and I am trying."
Her face stings in memories of the places he's hit before, but she can also feel the truth in him. She doesn't even need her empathy to be able to know his emotions are real, but they leave no doubt. He does love her, and he is trying. And without her beside him, he will fall. He will fall; he will fail. He will always be incomplete and never be able to be the man he should be, the hero he should be, and without him, England will suffer as well.
She presses her face into his hand, kisses his palm, and finally opens her eyes. They gaze into one another's eyes for a long while, only their heartbeats and the rain pouring outside sounding in the small room. "I am sorry," he pleads, "for everything I've done."
"Hush," she finally speaks. "Hush, luv." She kisses his palm again. "I know you're sorry, and I'm not going anywhere." She leans toward him, lets his arms come around her, and wraps her own arms around him. Gazing up into the eyes of the man who first rescued her from the cruel world around them, she promises them both, and millions of other souls who cannot hear her and have no clue of the dilemma, the sickness, that plagues them, "I'll never leave yoo. I love you, Brian."
"I love you too, Meggan." He holds her tight and buries his face in her long, blonde hair. His voice breaks into a sob as his tears flow faster, hotter, and, in a way, even harder than the rain outside. His tears flow, and she cries silently, too, as she holds him close. She can't leave him, though doing so may make her world safer and may even prolong her life. She can't leave him, because if she does, she'll be hurting them both. And how many people will suffer and die if Captain Britain is not there to save them?
Regardless of the world, though, regardless of any realm or city, she cannot leave him. Gods help her, she cannot leave him for no matter what he does, she knows she will always love him. And so leaving him may safe her body, may save her life, but it will also destroy her heart and soul. "I love you, Brian," she whispers and holds him close throughout the night.
The End

Date: 2021-12-30 08:43 pm (UTC)__________
“Stay here, I have to check on Cassandra.”
Herah Adaar barely managed to secure her staff, before she was running up the stairs to get to the rooms that were used as an infirmary. All the soldiers she passed on the way moved aside quickly, clearly seeing she was in a hurry.
The mage glanced at Knight-Captain Rylen, who was busy reading something as he walked towards the tents, before she reached her destination. She licked her lips, took a deep breath and only then did she knock on the door, not wanting to just barge in, in case the surgeon was inside or Cassandra was sleeping. As soon as she heard a clear ‘come in’, however, she opened the door, and didn’t even bother closing it before she was walking up to the other woman, making sure she truly was alright.
They had been exploring the Western Approach, and while Herah, accompanied by Cole, Dorian, and Blackwall, had been looking for artifacts left behind by the Grey Wardens, Cassandra, Sera, and two soldiers had been scouting the area around the Griffon Wing Keep to make sure it was free of darkspawn.
As soon as Herah had came back to the Keep about ten hours later, carrying two of the artifacts Blackwall had been interested in locating, a scout had informed her that Cassandra and the others had came back some time earlier, and that the Seeker had been injured.
“Are you well?” Herah asked, reaching out to run her fingers up Cassandra’s forearm, avoiding the shoulder and collarbone that were wrapped in bandages. “One of the scouts told us that you had been attacked. What happened?”
“I am fine,” Cassandra replied, before sitting down on the bed and scratching the back of her neck with one hand, clearly abashed. “We had been walking west, since that’s where the soldiers had seen a group of darkspawn yesterday. Sera had gone first to scout the area. We had been walking around for an hour or two, until we had reached a cliff, and then…”
Cassandra fell silent for a second, looking at the floor.
“We had found the darkspawn. A whole group. Four hurlocks. The soldiers had been fighting ghouls and archers, and I had tried to keep the hurlocks away from them. When only two had been left, I went after one of them so it wouldn’t get close to Sera, but I had lost sight of the other one,” the warrior admitted, annoyance obvious in her tone. “I had made a foolish mistake. One I will not repeat.”
Herah reached out and tangled her fingers with Cassandra’s, squeezing gently, and looked at the warrior’s injured shoulder.
“We can talk to Rylen and send a bigger group of soldiers to the area you explored,” the mage said. “This way we’ll cover more ground.”
“At least now we know they’re not gone like we had assumed,” Cassandra stood up and secured the bandages, before putting on a vest. “The sooner we send out patrols, the better.”
Nodding, Herah followed the Seeker outside.
It took them an hour to come up with a plan. Once Cassandra and Sera gave Herah and Rylen as many details as they could about the darkspawn’s location, and after all the soldiers received their orders, Herah and Cassandra went back to the warrior’s room.

Date: 2021-12-30 08:44 pm (UTC)“I am fine, I promise,” the Seeker repeated and raised one hand to cradle Herah’s cheek, thumb caressing her cheekbone.
The mage closed her eyes briefly, before wrapping her arms around the other woman, and Cassandra instantly leaned into the embrace. The hand that was touching Herah’s cheek a second ago moved to the back of her neck, making Herah exhale loudly.
Feeling Cassandra relax against her made Herah feel relieved, happy that they finally had a moment for themselves. As she turned her head a bit, mindful of her horns, she smiled against the warrior’s temple.
She wasn’t sure how long they stood there, embracing, but she didn’t care. Cassandra’s arms around her, her own around Cassandra, that was all she needed right then. When they eventually stepped back, the Seeker turned away and started unlacing her vest once more, but before she did so, Herah managed to see the corners of her lips rising in a gentle smile. Feeling herself smile as well, Herah sat down on the bed and started preparing for bed, too.
Soon, they were both lying in a bed that was, frankly, far too small for both of them to sprawl in as they usually did, but it still didn’t take them long to find a position that was both comfortable and didn’t put pressure on Cassandra’s injured shoulder.
They laid there in comfortable silence, Herah listening to the warrior breathe, and running fingers of one hand up and down Cassandra’s back slowly, touching various scars Cassandra once jokingly labelled as her “lucky scars”. Earlier the Seeker made an offhand comment about gaining a new scar, and it was just a casual remark, but for some reason it stayed with Herah. When the mage’s fingers encountered the edge of the bandage, she closed her eyes, because once again she couldn’t help thinking that if she had been there, maybe Cassandra wouldn’t have had gotten injured. Herah could have had a chance to protect her and the others.
“Don’t,” Cassandra said sternly, raising her head to look up at the mage. “I know what you are thinking right now. None of it was your fault. Even if you had been there someone could have gotten injured anyway.”
“I know that,” Herah sighed. “I really do. Still, the fact that I wasn’t there to help bothers me, you know?”
“I can imagine, yes,” Cassandra agreed, amused. They had this conversation more than once in the past, because they both were guilty of letting things like that get to them. Quite often, in fact. “But as you have told me before, we will be more prepared next time, that is all.”
Pressing a kiss to Cassandra’s forehead, Herah muttered: “We will be.”
