He stood at the foot of her bed, hadn’t meant to imply that any of this was her fault with his comment and he realized what it would sound like the second the words left his mouth. But it was too late. He tried to reassure her, that wasn’t what he meant by saying if he had been home he could have protected her, but it was how she took it, and was that moment he knew it was well and truly over.

He heard her telling him to get out—the finality in her words. The only way to make any of this better for her would be to walk away. He failed her, their marriage. No more trying because that only made things worse. He at least owed her this, a clean break, vows be damned. It was three years too late, to save her from this, but he’d let her go now even if it did break his heart.

“Stop…stop…give me a minute,” Steve said, escaping quickly from the bed, fleeing into the bathroom, locking the door behind him. At first, he wasn’t sure what he was doing. Then he heard her start with understanding platitudes…work, stress…understandable…blah blah blah.

He knew then he wasn’t going back out there. If he did, he’d have to explain that no, it wasn’t any of those things. It wasn’t even the back injury. None of that could be used as an excuse for why he was still soft. He stared at himself in the mirror, listening as Sam left the bedroom. Taking a deep breath, he heard his front door close. Bracing himself on the vanity’s edge, he dropped his head, letting the image of Sam leave his mind and another take her place.

Taller. Blond with striking bits of silvery-grey. Uniformed. Male. He felt his cock twitch. The first bit of life in it this evening despite having a woman he was compatible with, that on some level, did still desire…just not anymore…this way.

It wasn’t stress, work, or even injury. If Ted Hastings had been the one he brought home tonight, tonight would have gone much differently if it had been the Ted Hastings of his fantasies, mind you.

Letting Sam leave hurt, but he couldn’t tell her any of this. It was far better to let her walk away for the both of them.
